Jay Bruce homers and bullpen looks sharp in victory of Quad Cities

Davenport, IA - The Dayton Dragons (3-8) took advantage of the first off day of the season and it seemed to agree with them. Showing no signs of "bus lag" from an early morning six and a half hour trip, the Dragons jumped on the Swing of the Quad Cities in the early going and got great relief pitching late to beat the Swing 6-3 in the opening game of a four game series in front of 957 at John O' Donnell Stadium.

Swing starter Cory Meacham (LP, 1-2) got knocked around in his 3.0 innings on the night and did not get much defensive support from his teammates. Three Quad Cities errors in the first two innings help the Dragons take a 3-1 lead. Craig Tatum got home a run with the lone RBI in the first on a base hit to center. The hit scored Eric Eymann and extended Tatum's hit streak to eight games. The two other Dragons runs, one other in the first and one in the second came home thanks to Swing errors. Center fielder Colby Rasmus kicked around Tatum's single allowing a second run to score in the first and Meacham hurt himself with a throwing error in the second.

Dragons starter Travis Wood (ND) allowed two runs, both earned, in his 4.0 innings of work. Wood struggled with control early on walking two of the first the hitters he faced. The lead off walk to Daniel Nelson would come around to score and the Swing was on the board. Quad Cities added another off Wood in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Wes Swackhammer. Wood struck out four and walked three in his third start of the season allowing three hits.

The Dragons chased Meacham after the third adding a single tally in the starter's last inning of work to push the lead to 4-1. Bobby Mosby picked up the RBI with a gap double to right center, scoring B.J. Szymanski who led the inning off with a single. Dayton added another pair of runs in the top of the fourth off Trey Hearne (ND) on the first home run in a Dragons uniform by Jay Bruce. The two run shot to right center gave the Miami Valley's team the advantage at 6-1.

The second run allowed by Wood, got the Swing to within four at 6-2. Quad Cities added another single tally, this time in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jeff Stevens (WP, 1-0) who came in the game to start the fifth inning surrendered a lead off double to Calvin Hayes, who would come home on an RBI single from Nelson. Stevens turned in his best outing of the season since joining the club from extended spring training, tossing 2.1 innings of two hit baseball to pick up his first win of the season.

Wayne Lundgren (ND), who joined the Dragons on Monday after being reassigned from the Sarasota Reds, tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and got the Dragons to the ninth and closer Zac Stott (SV, 3). Stott was knocked around in the Dragons 5-4 loss to Fort Wayne on Saturday but regained the form that saw him start the season with two saves and 5.2 innings of scoreless pitching.

The Dragons continue the four game series with the Swing of the Quad Cities Tuesday afternoon at John O' Donnell Stadium. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 11:30 AM, with the first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
