LumberKings lose another low-scoring affair

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Terry Blunt homers in eighth, L-Kings still lose 3-2

Clinton, IA -- Great pitching, the continued hot streak of Terry Blunt, and the debut of slugging outfielder John Mayberry still didn't add up to a Clinton LumberKings victory Monday night, as they dropped the series-opening contest to the Lansing Lugnuts, 3-2.

The L-Kings drew within a run in the eighth inning as outfielder Terry Blunt belted a solo shot to deep right-center off nearly unhittable Lugnuts reliever Billy Carnline. In the bottom of the ninth, the LumberKings put the tying run on second base with two outs and nearly tied the game with Jose Vallejo at the plate. Vallejo hit one high and deep to the left field warning track, but Lugnuts left-fielder Cory Patton made a running over-the-shoulder grab to end the game.

Clinton lefty Michael Kirkman pitched much better than his season debut, allowing two earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. Still, Kirkman (0-2) took the tough luck loss to Lansing southpaw Chi-Hung Cheng. Cheng (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on just four hits. He also struck out seven LumberKings batters en route to the victory.

Lugnuts reliever Paul Phillips struck out two batters in the ninth and induced the Vallejo fly-ball to get his first save of the season.

Making his LumberKings debut in the ballgame was John Mayberry, the 1st round selection by the Texas Rangers in the June 2005 draft. Mayberry started in right field and batted cleanup, but was 0-for-4 on the evening with a strikeout.

The series resumes tomorrow at 6:00pm, with Clinton righty Kyle Rogers squaring off against Kristian Bell of Lansing. Listen to the game in Clinton on AM 1340 KROS, or stream the broadcast live over the internet at www.lumberkings.com.
