March 19, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Tyler Sheldrake's first goal of the season became the difference in the contest as the Mississippi RiverKings claimed its third straight victory in a 4-3 decision over the Texas Brahmas on Saturday, March 19th in Southaven's DeSoto Civic Center.
Sheldrake scored an even strength goal with less than seven and a half minutes remaining in the game to give Mississippi a 4-2 lead before Texas' Dylan Stanley finished the scoresheet with 37 seconds remaining.
Texas opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period, as Matt Burto became the beneficiary of a deflected puck off a RiverKings skate and scored an unassisted goal at 14:01 for a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi tied the game in the second period with a penalty shot goal 53 seconds of the period off the stick of Chris Auger, his 12th goal of the season. Mississippi is now 3-for-3 in penalty shot goals this season.
Brennan Sarazin followed that with his 11th goal of the year for the RiverKings to make the score 2-1 at 12:55 of the second. Auger and R.G. Flath assisted on the red-lighter by Sarazin.
Russell Smith increased the Mississippi lead to 3-1 at 1:44 of the final period on assists by Derek Landmesser and Patrik Levesque.
But Texas rallied with a power play goal from Mick Lawrence at 3:03 of the third period to get back within a goal at 3-2. That set up the final scoring sequence with Sheldrake's goal followed by Stanley's marker for the final outcome.
Mississippi finished 1-for-9 on the power play, while Texas was 1-for-4. The Brahmas outshot the RiverKings 31-30. Wayne Savage (20-15-3) took the loss for the Brahmas with a 26 save effort, while Alexander Pechurskiy (17-12-2) won his third straight game with a 28-save performance.
With the win, Mississippi remains in sixth place in the CHL Berry Conference with a 29-28-5 record, while Texas falls to 33-24-5 with the loss and still in third place in the conference standings.
Mississippi plays at Missouri Sunday afternoon at 5:05 PM. Broadcast coverage on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM and CHL-TV begins at 4:50 PM.
The RiverKings made a number of roster moves just prior to the game. Defensemen Steve Rizer and Evgeny Timkin were added to the roster and Mario Mjelleli was waived. Rizer played in his first professional game after completing his collegiate career at SUNY-Fredonia, an NCAA-Division Three school in New York State. Timkin is a native of Russia, who played 37 games this season for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, assisting on seven goals. Mjelleli played his first pro game last night for the RiverKings, but did not score.
