Moline, Ill. (March 19, 2011)- The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced that goaltender David Brown has been called up to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and that netminder Justin Grant has signed with the Mallards.
Brown, 26, leads the CHL in save percentage (.930), ranks second in goals against average (2.30) and is tied for second in shutouts (4). The Stoney Creek, Ontario, native has gone 17-16-1 in 37 games this year and has been named a finalist for the CHL's Most Outstanding Goaltender award .
This marks the fifth time this season Brown has been called up to the AHL. The 6' 0", 185-pound Brown earlier this month served as the Chicago Wolves' backup goalie for one game and earlier this season had stints as a backup with the Houston Aeros, Texas Stars and Toronto Marlies.
Brown earlier in his career spent parts of two seasons in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. As a rookie in 2007-08, he went 9-7-1 in 19 AHL games while turning in a 2.34 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. The following year Brown went 1-2-0 in four games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Brown was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the eighth round of the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the two hundred twenty-eighth overall pick.
Grant, 29, joins the Mallards for the third time this season. The Burlington, Iowa, native has not seen any game action with the Flock this year. Grant played briefly in the All American Hockey League last season with the Madison Ice Muskies and two years ago for the Evansville IceMen.
