Mallards defeat Gems 4 - 2

March 19, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

Heading into Saturday's game, the Dayton Gems and Quad City Mallards were battling to get a grip of the sixth spot in the Turner Conference standings of the CHL. Dayton lost some ground in that battle on Saturday as the Mallards defeated the Gems 4 - 2.

Part of that was due to Jake Riddle scoring a goal in each period to record a hat trick for Quad City.

Quad City outshot Dayton 35 - 26 on the evening. The Gems struggled to get shots off all night and weren't able to record more than 12 shots in a period.

The biggest weak point for the Gems was their inability to capitalize on powerplay opportunities. The Gems were 0 - 9 on powerplay chances.

In the game, Quad City jumped out in front in the first period. Riddle scored his 12th goal of the season and gave the Mallards a 1 - 0 lead.

The second period proved to be one full of scoring. Dayton was the first to find the back of the net when Tim Hartung scored just 1:08 into the period to tie the game at 1 - 1.

Quad City then took over for the remainder of the period. Brandon Marino and Riddle each scored in the period to give the Mallards a 3 - 1 lead.

Hartung did his best to put the Gems in position to tie the game by recording his second goal of the game midway through the final period. But that was all the Gems were able to manage. Riddle recorded his hat trick in the final moments of the game to give Quad City the 4 - 2 win.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
