Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WORCESTER, MAÂ -- T.J. Trevelyan had a goal and two assists and Alex Stalock made 27 saves as the Worcester Sharks held off a furious comeback by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center. The Sound Tigers have lost three straight games for the first time since early November to fall to 19-17-1-2 on the year.
Goaltender Rick DiPietro made his fourth rehab start for the Sound Tigers. Playing his second game in three days, DiPietro stopped 35 of the 39 shots he faced.
Worcester jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period on goals following two Sound Tigers turnovers. Benn Ferriero opened the scoring at the 10:37 mark, tallying his ninth goal of the year. With the Sharks on the power-play, Steven Zalewski picked off a Bridgeport clearing attempt and fed the puck to Ferriero who fired a shot over DiPietro's right pad. One minute later, T.J. Trevelyan intercepted a DiPietro clearing attempt and blasted a shot on goal that Corey Quirk deflected into the net for his second goal of the season.
The teams exchanged scoring chances midway through the second period. DiPietro made a nice save on a blast by Trevelyan. On the ensuing transition rush, Greg Moore and Sean Bentivoglio had a 2-on-1 break denied by Stalock.
The Sound Tigers got on the board with 3:14 left in the second period. A good pressure sequence by Bridgeport led to a backhand shot by Mark Wotton. Stalock turned the shot aside but Micheal Haley pounced on the loose rebound and slammed the puck through Stalock's legs to make it 2-1. It was Haley's second goal of the season.
Just fifty seconds after Bridgeport scored, the Sharks came back to extend their lead to two goals again. Trevelyan fired a shot from the top of the face-off circle which DiPietro got a piece of. However, the puck deflected off his glove and trickled towards the net as Dwight Helminen swooped in to finish off his sixth goal of the year.
Trevelyan made it 4-1 Worcester 1:19 into the third period. Trevelyan carried the puck around the net and sent a backhand shot through DiPietro's legs for his sixth goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers rally began with a power-play goal from Greg Mauldin at the 5:40 mark of the third period. Trevor Smith held the puck behind the net and found Mauldin in the face-off circle who snapped a shot past Stalock to bring Bridgeport within two.
Robin Figren scored his first AHL goal at the 9:23 mark to make the score 4-3. Figren took a pass from Jon Gleed, skated into the slot and put a shot through Stalock's legs.
Stalock was able to hold off the Sound Tigers the rest of the way. The best chance for Bridgeport came in the final minute when Stalock made a save on a shorthanded breakaway by Greg Moore.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Friday night when they open a home-and-home series with the Springfield Falcons. Face-off at the MassMutual Center is set for 7:30 pm. The teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7:00 pm at Harbor Yard. Saturday's game will feature Pascal Morency Bobblehead Night. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a bobblehead featuring the popular Sound Tigers forward. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000 or log on to www.soundtigers.com.
