Syracuse Crunch News Release

Hartford, CT (January 3, 2010) - The Syracuse Crunch were held scoreless for the final 56:32 of the game, but picked up a point after eventually falling 2-1 to the Hartford Wolf Pack in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the XL Center.

Playing their fifth game in seven days and coming off a home win over Albany last night, the Crunch looked to make it two in a row against Harford.

Jared Aulin, who now has four points (3g, 1a) over his last four games, got the Crunch on the board first at the 8:28 mark of the opening period when he took a pass from Dan Fritsche and skated into the Hartford zone, backing in the defense.

Aulin made a quick toe drag move to his forehand and snapped a shot from the slot that beat Chad Johnson to the blocker side for the 1-0 Syracuse lead.

Kevin Lalande stopped all nine shots he saw in the first, as the Crunch killed off two penalties.

Lalande and Johnson were both outstanding in the second period, stopping eight and 13 shots respectively in the middle session.

The Crunch were able to keep their 1-0 lead until Ilkka Heikkinen's wrister from the left circle found its way past a diving Fritsche and over Lalande's glove to spoil the Syracuse netminder's shutout bid with just under nine minutes to go in regulation.

Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but the score was still knotted at 1-1 after 60 minutes of play.

The Crunch out-shot the Wolf Pack 5-0 in overtime, but could not push the game-winner past a sharp Johnson.

Johnson carried that over into the shootout, stopping Aulin, Bates Battaglia and Derek MacKenzie. AHL leading scorer Corey Locke, P.A. Parenteau and Heikkinen all scored on Lalande to the glove side in the tiebreaker to give Hartford the win.
