Sharks Get Revenge, Down IceCaps

The St. John's IceCaps were unable to extend their five-game point streak as they fell 6-3 to the Worcester Sharks Friday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

Despite two-point efforts from linemates John Albert (1G, 1A), Scott Kosmachuk (1G, 1A) and JC Lipon (2A), the IceCaps were bested by an equally hot Sharks team, which entered play without a regulation loss in their last six.

Evan Trupp notched a hat trick and four points while Trevor Parkes had three assists. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23-of-27 shots in the IceCaps goal.

In their first meeting since a four-goal IceCaps comeback victory on Feb. 15th at Mile One Centre, Worcester got off to a fast start as Evan Trupp scored just 1:12 into the game. Trupp took a feed and barrelled in on a partial break, blasting a shot upstairs on Hellebuyck for a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later the IceCaps evened things up on some nice passing. Kosmachuk put on the brakes inside the Sharks blueline and fed Lipon in the middle. Lipon then slipped a pass to a streaking Albert, who buried it past Aaron Dell.

The Sharks retook the lead midway through the first when Eriah Hayes gathered the loose puck in the neutral zone, gained the blueline and ripped a slap shot past Hellebuyck to make it 2-1. However, the IceCaps once again tied the score later in the frame on Balisy's 13th of the season. Brenden Kichton took a pass at the blueline and pinched in before finding Balisy in the slot for the redirection.

At 12:33 of the second, Rylan Schwartz gave Worcester the lead but 44 seconds later Kosmachuk tipped a Lipon shot from the high slot for his 12th of the season to pull the IceCaps even, 3-3.

The seesaw battled continued minutes later as Worcester took the lead once again. Trupp fired a wild shot from the left point that fooled Hellebuyck to put the home team on top 4-3.

Jason Jaffray appeared to tie the game in the third when he beat Dell on a wraparound but the goal was waived off after incidental contact in the crease. The Sharks would later add two empty-netters to seal the win.

The IceCaps face the Sharks again Saturday at the DCU Center for the second of a two-game set.
