Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Joe Sever collected three RBI on Friday night, but none were bigger than his final. The first baseman delivered the Carolina Mudcats a 7-6 victory over the Salem Red Sox in 10 innings at Five County Stadium on a single to right. The Mudcats (10-6, 39-44) earned their fourth straight win and dropped the Red Sox to 7-8 and 40-43 overall.
Grant Sides (3-0) picked up the win after keeping Salem scoreless in the top of the 10th. The Red Sox tried to squeeze four innings out of Kyle Martin (3-2), but the right-hander surrendered the game-tying run in the ninth and allowed the winning run on base. He allowed two runs, four hits and walked two in 3 1/3 innings.
Trailing 6-5 in the final frame of regulation, Alex Monsalve worked the count full and mashed a double to left. Cody Ferrell pinch ran for Monsalve and scored on Jerrud Sabourin's single up the middle.
Logan Vick set the table for the dramatic finish in the 10th by drawing a one-out walk from Martin. Yhoxian Medina lofted a single to left and Vick raced into third. Matty Ott relieved Martin and Salem brought the infield in. After fouling off two pitches, Sever poked a single into right that scored Vick for the win.
The Mudcats built a 4-0 lead behind starter D.J. Brown through the first four innings. The team staked a 2-0 lead when Yandy Diaz scored Vick on a groundout to third. Jeremy Lucas followed with a single to score Sever.
Medina tripled and crossed home on a roller to short by Sever in the third inning. The fourth run came courtesy a bases-loaded walk by Medina in the fourth.
A missed catch in the fifth inning sparked the Salem offense. Aneury Tavarez reached on a dropped fly ball in right by Luigi Rodriguez. The Red Sox used two groundouts and a wild pitch to move the runner to third. Four straight batters reached with two out and the Sox scored three times to cut the deficit to one.
Tavarez tied the game in the sixth with a solo shot out to right. Ryan Dent singled and Brown was lifted for reliever Josh Martin. Dent moved into scoring position by stealing second and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Matty Johnson. Johnson went to second on the throw home and later scored on a hit by Michael Miller.
With Salem up 6-4, Sever got his team closer by launching his first home run of the year, a fly ball just over the short wall in right field.
The series with the Salem Red Sox continues on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with a third night of fireworks. The clubs wrap up on Sunday at 2 p.m. with World Cup Day and Kids Run the Bases, presented by Amerigas.
