Salem RidgeYaks News Release
After last night's washout in Frederick, the Salem Red Sox open a three game series against the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. First pitch is at 7:00.
Can't Dodge the Rain: For the second straight trip to Frederick, the scheduled series finale between the Salem Sox and Frederick Keys was washed out due to rain. The June 11th game was cancelled and last night's scheduled contest will be rescheduled as part of a dou- bleheader August 27th. It was a series defined by rain in Frederick this week. The first game was limited to five innings by rain and game two of the series was limited to eight innings. The bad luck with the weather might continue at Carolina. Each of the first two times the Sox have played at Carolina this season, the first game of the series was postponed due to rain (4/15, 5/15).
Dominance on the Hill: Cody Kukuk's five scoreless innings Wednes- day night continued a stretch of mound dominance for the Salem pitching staff. Over the last eight games dating back to June 25th, the Sox staff has compiled a minuscule 1.77 ERA (13 ER/66 IP). The eight starters have allowed just ten earned runs in eight games, posting a 2.13 ERA of their own in the same time span (10 ER/42.1 IP). The starter's success marked an incredible turnaround from the first half-dozen games in the half. Painfully, Salem starters surren- dered 34 runs in the six games in the road trip to begin the second half, amassing a 11.62 ERA (34 ER/26.1 IP). A bit of simple math shows the bullpen has been even more dominant in this eight game stretch. The Sox pen has allowed only three earned runs in eight games, posting a 1.14 ERA (3 ER/23.2 IP).
An Impressive Start: Cody Kukuk was dominant in a much needed bounce back start Wednesday night. Kukuk got the win, going five innings, allowing just an unearned run and two hits, with three walks and six strikeouts. This comes on the heels of a tough June, where Kukuk finished with an 19.55 ERA in four starts on the month. He lasted a total of just nine and two thirds in June (21 ER/9.2 IP). But Cody was dominant to start July, picking up his first win since May 8th.
He's An All-Star for a Reason: The Sox turn to Justin Haley tonight to continue their dominance on the mound. Haley has posted a 2.58 ERA this season, the fourth best ERA in the league. Haley is set to make his eight start, holding a 4-2 record with a 2.57 ERA in his pre- vious seven. Haley has posted quality starts five times this year, and has gone at least six innings in six of his seven starts. Haley has made two appearances against Carolina this season, one start and one in relief. He is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA, surrendering three runs and nine hits in ten and a third innings pitched against the Mudcats.
Power at the Top: Matty Johnson led off the game Wednesday night with a home run over the right field wall. It was just the second home run of the season for Johnson and third of his career. His last home run came in the home opener this season, on April 8th against Win- ston-Salem. Last night was also the first career home run for John- son on the road, with both previous shots coming at home. Johnson's only previous home run coming into the 2014 season came back in 2012, also as a member of the Salem Sox.
