Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, won 4-1 over the Winston-Salem Dash in a nationally televised game on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Luis Parra pitched seven strong innings of one-run ball, earning his seventh win of the season. The game was nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
The Pelicans (9-5, 53-29) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Nick Williams hit an opposite field home run off Dash starter J.B. Wendelken to give the Birds a 1-0 lead. The home run was the eighth home run for Williams on the season.
The Dash (8-7, 38-46) threatened to score in the top of the third. With one out, Cleuluis Rondon doubled to center field, and Jacob May walked in the next at-bat. Parra escaped the jam when Keenyn Walker grounded into a double play on runner's interference.
Parra pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run, scattering four hits while walking three and striking out four.
Myrtle Beach scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. With nobody out, Chris Garia, Hanser Alberto, and Williams singled to load the bases. Garia scored when Jorge Alfaro was hit by a pitch, giving the Pelicans a 2-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Preston Beck grounded into a force out at second, scoring Alberto. Chris Grayson then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Williams.
The Dash scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning when Nick Basto hit a solo shot to left field off Parra.
Abel De Los Santos entered the game in the eighth inning and faced the minimum. He came back out for the ninth to complete the two-inning save and secure the 4-1 win for the Birds.
Parra (7-4) earned the win, Wendelken (5-7) took the loss, and De Los Santos (6) picked up the save, striking out three in his two innings.
Myrtle Beach travels to Woodbridge, Virginia where they will play four games over a three-day span. The postponement from June 27 will be resumed on July 5, picked up in the top of the fifth. The Pelicans will wear the Stars and Stripes caps on July 4 at 6:35 p.m. Chad Bell (2-0, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound for the Pelicans. The Nationals turn to right-hander Dakota Bacus (3-3, 3.58 ERA).
