WINSTON-SALEM DASH (8-7, 38-46) vs. WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (6-8, 39-43)
RHP Tony Bucciferro (6-6, 3.53 ERA) vs. RHP Glenn Sparkman (3-2, 1.76 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #85 (Home Game #41)
DASH LOSE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION The Dash fell 4-1 to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday night. The game was televised nationally on CBS Sports Network as part of its agreement with Minor League Baseball. It is the only Carolina League game that is scheduled to be featured. Nick Basto launched a home run in his return to Winston-Salem, but that proved to be the lone blemish for winning pitcher Luis Parra over seven frames. Winston-Salem starter J.B. Wendelken suffered his seventh loss despite working through six innings (4 ER, 6 H).
FOURTH OF JULY AT BB&T BALLPARK For the fourth straight season, the Dash will play a home game on Independence Day, and the club will try to win its first such contest on Friday. Salem bested Winston 9-7 in 2011, while Myrtle Beach knocked off the Dash in 2012 (8-4) and 2013 (8-5, F/11). Over the last two seasons, the Dash have set an attendance record on July 4. BB&T Ballpark hosted 7,285 fans in 2012 before the Dash bested that attendance record in 2013 (7,576), still the highest in BB&T Ballpark history.
WINCING WINSTON Winston-Salem returns home with a significantly different roster than it had when the Dash concluded a three-game series against Carolina on Monday. On Wednesday, shortstop Tim Anderson (right wrist) and right-hander Frank Montas (right knee) were placed on the disabled list. That night, Courtney Hawkins suffered a concussion and joined Anderson and Montas on the disabled list Thursday. Thus, the Dash lost two first-round picks and a pitcher who was supposed to suit up for the World Team in next weekend's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
TWO MORE ROSTER MOVES FRIDAY The White Sox announced Friday that right-hander Angel Sanchez, whom the organization claimed from Tampa Bay, will join the Dash. To make room, fellow righty Braulio Ortiz has been promoted to Double-A Birmingham.
DeMICHELE'S DOZEN Winston-Salem infielder Joey DeMichele has hit safely in 13 consecutive games dating back to June 20. Thus, DeMichele has matched Justin Jirschele's run from May 1-June 3 for the longest by a Dash hitter in 2014. During this spurt, DeMichele is hitting .320 (16-for-50) with six RBIs and five runs. Thanks to this recent surge from DeMichele, the Dash have now posted six double-digit hitting streaks this year.
INNINGS EATER Dash starter Tony Bucciferro leads the Carolina League and is third in High-A with 99.1 innings of work thus far this season. Bucciferro has worked seven or more innings in seven starts, including five of his last seven outings. The former Michigan State star averages better than six innings per start. Bucciferro leads all CL qualifiers in walks per nine innings (0.91, 10 BB in 99.1 IP), while he is fifth in fewest runners per nine innings (10.5). Plus, his 3.53 earned run average is 10th-best on the circuit.
SIZING UP THE BLUE ROCKS Winston-Salem and Wilmington split their 10 meetings in the first half, with the final scheduled clash canceled due to rain. Both teams' offenses struggled in these 10 contests. The Dash scored just 30 total runs, five fewer than Wilmington. The Blue Rocks are last in the league in average (.222) and runs per game (3.7). Lynchburg recorded consecutive no-hitters against the Blue Crew last week in Delaware.
DASH DOTS Winston-Salem fell to 1-5 in rubber matches with its loss at Myrtle Beach on Thursday...The Dash mustered just 19 hits and seven runs in their series versus the Pelicans...New Wake Forest men's basketball coach Danny Manning, who joined the Demon Deacons from Tulsa in April, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Friday... Laronda Carlton, the winner of the Winston-Salem Journal National Anthem Tryouts, will sing immediately before Manning's first pitch.
