Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers made Butch Hobson's pitching scheme easy to follow on Friday night.
Lancaster scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 12-3 win over the Road Warriors in the opener of a three-game series in front of 6,289 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Trailing, 1-0, entering the bottom of the first, the Barnstormers were able to build off early wildness on the part of Road Warriors starter Jason Norderum (3-7). The lefty walked Wayne Lydon to start the inning, and the center fielder promptly stole second. Stephen Douglas dropped a bunt along the third base line and beat it out, putting runners at the corners. Then, Lancaster simply marched around the bases as Norderum walked the next three batters, producing two runs. Brandon Jones looped a single into left, driving home Tommy Everidge for a 3-1 lead. Norderum finally picked up an out on a sacrifice fly to right by Iggy Suarez.
Then came Yaibel Tamayo. The 28-year old native of Cuba launched a fly ball to deep right center beyond a leaping try by center fielder Adrian Ortiz. First base umpire Matt Beaver initially ruled that the ball was in play, and Tamayo stopped at second with an apparent RBI double. After Hobson went out to argue, the umpires conferred and gave Tamayo the home run, his second of the week for a 7-1 lead.
"(Tamayo) gets more confident every day he plays," said Hobson. "The more you see him, the more you like him."
That huge lead enabled Hobson to stay with his pitching scheme, getting six relievers geared up for the playoffs which begin at York on Wednesday.
Ross Peeples went the first three, allowing one run on four hits. Yunior Novoa went the next two, allowing one run and slipping out of a fifth inning jam with the bases loaded. Tim McNab, T.J. Beam, Ryan Cullen and Jonah Bayliss worked one inning each. Cullen had the best outing, allowing an infield single and striking out two. As a result, he was awarded the win.
"Everybody needs to get some work with the two days off before the playoffs," said Hobson. "It worked out well tonight."
Lancaster's offense stalled for 5 1/3 innings after the seven-run outburst in the first but kicked into gear again late. Douglas grounded a two-run single up the middle in the sixth for a 9-2 lead, and Fernando Seguignol capped the scoring with a three-run homer into the right center screen in the eighth.
The Barnstormers and Road Warriors meet again at 6:30 Saturday evening with fireworks to follow. Lefty Steve Hammond (0-0) will make his Clipper Magazine Stadium debut. Matching up against him will be right-hander Luke Massetti (8-12). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
