Soo Greyhounds News Release
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- They started the New Year off the way they ended 2014.
Sparked by a late first period goal, and early second period tally as well, the Soo Greyhounds took a lead they would never relinquish while putting up seven goals in victory on Saturday Night.
It was the second and final regular season meeting between the Hounds and Ottawa 67's. The visitors would give the call to netminder Marcus Semiao who would be making his 1st career start.
And while the Greyhounds came out buzzing including back-to-back shifts that kept the play in the 67's zone, and an ANTHONY SALINITRI shot off the post, it would be the visitors opening the scoring.
On their first of three power plays of the game, Ottawa's Dante Salituro wired a high shot from the top of the circle at 7:15 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Hounds would face the deficit until late in the first period despite BRYAN MOORE's nifty toe-drag to the goal from a feed from JEAN DUPUY came up short.
At the other end of the ice COLTON WHITE kept it just a one-goal deficit sliding to take away an Ottawa chance when his defence partner fell leaving the Hound rearguard outnumbered in his own zone.
BRYAN MOORE then tied the contest after blocking a shot and then skating up the left wing to begin the play. The Hounds overage forward outmuscled an Ottawa defender, got a shot off that Semiao got a piece of before crossing the line to tie the game 1-1.
Then with 3.4 seconds to play in the period, ZACH SENYSHYN received a feed from around the net by BLAKE SPEERS that he would backhand high past the Ottawa goaltender setting the Hounds a 2-1 lead after the first period.
And with the Hounds taking the lead late in the first, they would then extend their lead early in the second period.
Twenty-three seconds into the period, GUSTAV BOURAMMAN made the pass from point-to-point to COLTON WHITE who's shot was redirected by DAVID MILLER for his 12th goal of the year and a 3-1 Greyhound lead.
At the 8:51 mark, JEAN DUPUY took the puck to the net and got a shot off before KEIGAN GOETZ followed the play up and ensured his 7th goal of the year, and now a 4-1 lead.
CHARLEY GRAASKAMP was parked to the left post of the Ottawa goal and would put home his 4th goal of the year at 13:31 with assists to ANTHONY SALINITRI and KYLE JENKINS, increasing the Hounds lead to 5-1 through two periods.
After KYLE JENKINS made it 6-1 at the 2:02 mark of the third, that was part of a start that saw the Hounds hold the 67's shotless in the opening five minutes of the period.
Near the midway point of the period the visitors would gain some short-lived momentum netting two goals in just over two minutes by Nathan Todd and Connor Graham.
JOSEPH RAAYMAKERS kept the three goal lead for the Hounds intact denying former teammate Trent Mallette on a hard shot in close with under seven minutes to play.
And with the clock winding down, GABE GUERTLER notched his 19th goal of the season with under three to play capping off the Hounds seven goal outburst, and 7-3 victory.
Seven different goal scorers and all four lines contributed offensively in the Hounds win as they improved their record to 27-8-0-2, good for 56 points.
