Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Binghamton Senators topped the Syracuse Crunch tonight, 4-3, in a shootout at the War Memorial Arena.
The loss moves the Crunch to 27-29-4-7 on the season and 2-5-2-1 in the season series with the Senators. By making it to overtime, the Crunch now have a point in the last four games.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis turned away 25 of 28 shots in defeat, while his Senators counterpart Andrew Hammond stopped 24 of 27. The Crunch were able to convert on two of four power-play opportunities. The penalty kill unit allowed one goal on six Binghamton man advantages.
Each team scored once in the first period to send the teams into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Senators opened scoring with a goal at the 9:13 mark. Derek Grant brought the puck into the offensive zone and beat Gudlevskis with an unassisted shot from the left side. The Crunch responded nine minutes later. Brett Connolly and Jonathan Marchessault started an odd man rush immediately following a Crunch penalty kill. Hammond went down on the cross-crease pass from Connolly, allowing Marchessault to lift the puck over him and score to the glove side at the 18:13 mark. Andrej Sustr earned a point with the secondary assist.
After another pair of goals, the Crunch and Senators finished the second period tied 2-2. The Crunch took the lead with a power-play goal at the 14:39 mark of the middle frame. Mike Angelidis won the faceoff in the left circle and passed the puck back to Connolly at the blue line. Nikita Nesterov one-timed a Connolly feed from the right point to go up 2-1. The Senators responded with a power-play goal of their own with 41 seconds left in the period. Chris Wideman passed across the slot to Alex Grant. Grant's slap shot from the left circle went wide, ricocheted off the glass, and onto the stick of Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Pageau was able to redirect the puck past Gudlevskis from the right side of the crease.
One goal by each team in the third period forced an overtime frame. Yanni Gourde pushed the puck ahead to Dmitry Korobov, who passed across the slot to Geoff Walker. Walker snapped it in for a power-play goal at the 9:32 mark. The Senators evened the score with 5:14 to play. Matt Puempel passed back to A. Grant, who took a slap shot through traffic.
After a scoreless overtime period, Cole Schneider scored the only goal in the shootout to defeat Syracuse 4-3.
The Crunch travel to Rochester to face the Americans this Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
