
Wild Beats Marlies 2-1 in a Shootout

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Wild (26-30-4-6, 62 points) defeated the Toronto Marlies (40-20-2-4, 86 points) 2-1 in a shootout in fro nt of 5,278 fans at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (12-16-2) made 38 saves on 39 shots in regulation. He secured the victory by stopping all four Toronto shootout attempts. Iowa forward Jamie MacQueen scored in his team debut, the Wild's lone regulation goal. Forwards Carson McMillan and Zack Phillips each scored on shootout attempts, helping Iowa to its third straight road win. Marlies goalie Garret Sparks (9-5-1) stopped 25 Wild shots in regulation and two of four Iowa attempts in the shootout defeat. Toronto's Peter Holland scored the Marlies lone regulation goal. The Wild continues a five-game road trip on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 2 p.m. in Utica.
After a scoreless first period of play, Iowa picked up a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the middle frame off Jamie MacQueen's second goal of the AHL season. Defenseman Steven Kampfer and forward Carson McMillan worked the puck to MacQueen at center. In his Iowa debut, MacQueen beat goalie Garret Sparks for the opening goal.
Toronto tied the game 1-1 at 1:12 of the third period as Peter Holland got the Marlies on the board. Defenseman T.J. Brennan and forward Kenny Ryan each had an assist on the play. Holland beat goalie Johan Gustafsson for his ninth goal of the season.
The two teams skated in a scoreless overtime and then went to a shootout. Iowa posted two goals on four attempts in the shootout, with Phillips and McMillan beating Sparks. Gustafsson was critical to the win by stopping all four Marlies attempts, locking down the victory.
Iowa continues a five-game road trip on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 2 p.m. in Utica. The team will also make stops in Grand Rapids, Chicago and Milwaukee prior to returning home on Friday, April 11 for Chicago at 7:05 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
