Senators Take Two of Three from Akron
August 20, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
Behind home runs from Drew Vettleson and Isaac Ballou, the Harrisburg Senators won the rubber game, 5-3, over the Akron RubberDucks Thursday at Canal Park. The Senators (59-65) have won back-to-back games for the first time since July 7-8.
Senators starter Lucas Giolito threw 87 pitches in five innings of work to pick up his second with Harrisburg. The tall right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five. The Senators scored in the top of the first inning when Wilmer Difo and Brian Goodwin both singled before completing a successful double steal. Shawn Pleffner drove in Difo with a sacrifice fly. Akron responded with a run in the first and third off Giolito to take a 2-1 lead, but Harrisburg shot back in the fourth.
Vettleson led off the fourth with his fifth home run of the year and was followed by Pedro Severino's 13th double. Severino moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Ballou. Giolito gave way to Gilberto Mendez after five, and again the Senators' bullpen was solid. Mendez fired a scoreless sixth after Harrisburg added a run on Ballou's solo shot in the top half. Cutter Dykstra then led the seventh inning off with a triple and scored on a Pleffner RBI single. Mendez, however, ran into trouble in the seventh and left the game with two on and two out. Bryan Harper entered and struck out Akron's Bradley Zimmer to end the threat.
Harper allowed Akron to come a run closer as the RubberDucks' Nellie Rodriguez hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning. Harper bounced back, though, and struck out the next three batters in order. Paul Demny allowed two runners to reach in the ninth, but shut the door with a strikeout of Zimmer for his fourth save in five tries with Harrisburg.
The Senators now return home for a weekend series with the Portland Sea Dogs. Tomorrow's series opener will begin at 7:00 p.m. The pregame show will start at 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports 1460am, iHeart Radio, and on Tune In.
