SERIES AT A GLANCE: After a washout on Tuesday, the Squirrels and Mets were forced to play a doubleheader on Wednesday. Binghamton tallied six runs in the second inning and grabbed game one, 7-4, over the RVA. Matt Gage lasted just 1.2 innings (shortest in his career) and became just the third Richmond starter this year to allow seven or more earned runs in an outing. The Squirrels rebounded and won game two, 2-1, behind a superb performance from starter Matt Lujan (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R). He also helped his own cause with an RBI double, which turned out to be the go-ahead run. This is the first and only time during the regular season the Flying Squirrels find NYSEG Stadium where they will take on the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) for a three-game series. This is the second to last ballpark in the Eastern League the Squirrels have discovered with the last being Canal Park in Akron, OH (8/27-8/30). This is the third series between the B-Mets and Richmond. The two previous showdowns took place at The Diamond. The Squirrels took two out of three from the Mets in the first series (5/11-5/13). This included the finale they won thanks to a Mitch Delfino walk-off hit in the 10th inning. The Squirrels bullpen was impressive in this series with 12 scoreless innings scattered over the three contests. After almost over two months, the two clubs crossed paths again in Richmond and they split a four-game series (7/30-8/2). The Squirrels dropped game one, 11-3, and their bullpen surrendered 10 of the 11 runs. These 11 runs total are tied for the most allowed in a game this season. In all of these games, a Richmond starting pitcher failed to last at least six innings. Binghamton had a tremendous turnaround and went an Eastern League best 19-10 in July with a team ERA of 2.18 (best in the league during that month).
TORTOISE AND THE HARE(RRIS): Devin Harris is starting to find a groove again with the bat. He is 10 for his last 26 at the plate and also holds a seven-game hitting streak. Harris 3-6 during the doubleheader on Wednesday and this included a mammoth three-run home run in game one. The outfielder has nine RBI's in his previous seven games. Before this, he had only one RBI from July 26 to August 11. Harris went just 2-17 leading up to the start of this current hitting streak. He is second on the club in homers (10) and also RBI's (52).
SERIES SLUMP AND ROAD SLUMP: The Squirrels have only won one series in their last seven attempts. The only series victory came against New Hampshire (8/4-8/6). This stretch includes a series sweep at the hands of Altoona from July 27 to July 29. It was the first time the team got swept since early May (5/1-5/3) against New Britain. The unchartered territory has caused for some dropoff as well with the team recently. They have won just five of their previous 16 road games. In the road wins, they have won in convincing fashion for the most part by outscoring their opponent 27-12 in those five contests. Richmond plays 12 of their next 15 games away from The Diamond.
OVER PAR AND NOW EVEN: Following game one yesterday, Richmond briefly fell below the 500 mark (60-61) for the first time since June 4th (25-26). The team quickly bounced back with a win in game two to reach 500 again. Between June 5th and now, the Squirrels have only been right at the 500 mark three times (6/5, 26-26 & recently 60-60, 61-61). The rest of the days during this span they spent above this high water mark.
FIND THE WIN: In August, a Richmond starting pitcher has only recorded a victory three. The third time recently occurred in game two on Wednesday with Matt Lujan picking up a win. The first one happened on August 4th when Kelvin Marte tossed seven shutout innings against New Hampshire in a 3-0 win. Joe Biagini was the last to earn a win and that was on August 9th against Altoona. Since that day, seven games have been played and Tyler Beede is the only starting hurler to last at least six innings in a start (8/13). In the five games (including game one Wednesday) prior to Lujan's game two start, Richmond starting pitchers allowed 21 of the 27 runs from the opposition.
UPCOMING HOMESTAND PROMOTIONS: (8/24) Williamsburg Community Night. (8/25) Fredericksburg Community Night. (8/26) Fleece Blanket Giveaway. (9/4) Free Shirt Fridays, Happy Hour & Ladies Night. (9/5) Superblast Saturday and 20th Anniversary of Billy Madison. (9/6) Kids Club Metal Lunchbox Giveaway. (9/7) Bark In the Park #3 - Labor Day.
RICHMOND STARTING PITCHER: RHP Chase Johnson (0-0, --)
Johnson will make his first career start with the Flying Squirrels and his 19th on the season. The 23-year-old was originally drafted in the third round in 2013 by the San Francisco Giants. In his first full professional season, 2014, he started 22 games for the Augusta GreenJackets (A) and sported a 4.57 ERA. So for this year, Johnson has been with San Jose (A+) and has put up better numbers (8-3, 2.43 ERA, 18 starts). In those outings, opponents were hitting just .235 against him, which is still second lowest in the California League. He was also named a California League All-Star. The California native turned up the dial in his final appearance with San Jose before the promotion. He recorded a career high 14 strikeouts in six innings on August 14th and this was actually just his sixth professional bullpen outing. He came out of the pen due to a Tim Hudson MLB rehab start. He played his college ball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER : RHP Gabriel Ynoa (8-8, 3.86)
Ynoa, 22, will make his 22nd start for the Mets in 2015 and also his fourth career against the Squirrels. His first start against Richmond came on August 31, 2014 (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K). Another outing was earlier this year on May 13 where he went seven innings again, allowed three hits, and one earned run. His most recent start against the RVA was on August 1 (5.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R). Ynoa has logged the most innings (133.0) among any Binghamton pitcher and this includes back-to-back complete games on June 27 and July 2. The right-hander signed with the Mets as a free agent in 2009. He spent the beginning of last season with St. Lucie (A+) before he earned a mid-season promotion to Binghamton. With St. Lucie, Ynoa went 8-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 14 starts (64 K, 13 BB). His control has translated over to this season as he has only 25 walks total. He was ranked #16 prospect by Baseball America after 2014 season.
