
Senators Split Doubleheader in Altoona

The Harrisburg Senators split a doubleheader with the Altoona Curve Monday, winning game one 7-2 and falling in game two, 4-3. The split keeps Harrisburg (30-40) at 10 games under .500 on the season.
Colin Bates was fantastic in game one, lasting 6.1 innings, in which he allowed two runs on four hits. The win improved him to 3-0 on the season, as Bryan Harper finished the final two outs of the game.
Meanwhile, the Senators offense started quickly as Trea Turner doubled with one out and then scored on a Brian Goodwin single. Drew Vettleson then tripled Goodwin home and Cutter Dykstra drove in Vettleson with a single to make it 3-0, Senators. Harrisburg scored again in the third when Pedro Severino drove in Goodwin with a single. Goodwin scored his third run of the game in the fifth when Shawn Pleffner hit a two-run single that also scored Vettleson. Severino added a second RBI with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning.
Both Goodwin and Vettleson had three hits and three runs scored in game one. Severino and Pleffner each had two hits and two RBI.
However in game two, the Harrisburg bats were quiet, scoring a run in the second inning on a Chris Bostick RBI infield single. The Senators did not score again until the seventh inning when Jose Lozada started a rally with a single to right field. Turner followed with a walk, and Wilmer Difo drove in Lozada with an RBI single to cut Altoona's lead to 4-2. With runners at the corners, Difo took off for second with Goodwin at the plate. Difo stole the bag, but slid too far and came off the bag, where he was tagged by Altoona shortstop Gift Ngoepe. Goodwin then singled in Turner to make it a one-run game, but Matt Skole flied out to the warning track in right-center field to end the game.
Game two starter James Simmons pitched the first four innings, allowing two earned runs. Gilberto Mendez followed and retired the first five he faced, but then allowed a single, which was followed by an error and a two-run double. Both runs were unearned to Mendez, who hasn't allowed an earned run since June 3. .
The Senators now travel to Binghamton to begin a four-game series with the B-Mets tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. The pregame show will start at 6:20 p.m. on Fox Sports 1460am, iHeart Radio, and on Tune In.
