AKRON, OH - The Harrisburg Senators won a shortened series opener against the Aeros Friday night by the final score of 9-3 in front of 5,979 fans at Canal Park. The Senators jumped out to an early edge against Akron starter Kelvin De La Cruz and the late inning rain helped them hold on for victory. The game was called after the seventh inning was completed. This marks the second straight loss for the Aeros as they now stand at 16-25 and with the victory the Senators improved to 21-20 on the season.
The lefty De La Cruz started the game of by retiring the first three batters but then struggled in the top of the second innings. The Senators brought home five runs in the frame thanks to run-scoring single, a two-run double and a pair of RBI outs. Harrisburg would then increase the lead to 7-0 in the third inning thanks to a Chris Marrero two-run home run in the third.
The Aeros would not go quietly into the night however, as in the bottom of the fourth left fielder John Drennen doubled on a ground ball to right field knocking in Aeros second baseman Cord Phelps. Akron would strike once again in the bottom of the fifth inning as designated hitter Nick Welgarz hit a towering home run to center field for his seventh homer of the season to make it 7-2. A sacrifice fly by Cord Phelps would then provide the final Aeros run of the evening.
The Senators would add two more runs in top of the seventh inning off Aeros reliever Carlton Smith providing for the final score of the night at 9-3. The rain came down after that and play was halted following the completion of the seventh frame.
Harrisburg starter Aaron Thomspon (2-5) earned the win by working out of much trouble in 5.2 innings pitched. De La Cruz (1-2) took the loss as he delivered 4.0 innings surrendering seven runs on nine hits. Pitching strong out of the bullpen was Connor Graham who pitched two scoreless innings only giving up one hit and striking out one for the Aeros pitching staff.
