Seattle Thunderbirds News Release

Kent, February 6, 2009 - Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman Sena Acolatse will be a guest instructor at the inaugural event of the Breakaway Youth Development Program.

Breakaway Youth Development is a non-profit foundation whose purpose is to introduce kids with diverse backgrounds to non-traditional sports and activities.

Introduction to Hockey, the inaugural event of the Breakaway Youth Development Program is scheduled for February 14, from 9am to 11:30am at Castle Ice Arena in Renton. Sena is in his third year with the T-Birds and has four goals and 12 assists in 52 games this season. Sena is eligible for the 2009 NHL Draft which takes place this summer.

"Breakaway Youth Development will introduce kids to sports that have historically been unavailable and under-represented in their communities. This lack of diversity and representation in hockey is largely due to lack of access to rinks and facilities and therefore lack of awareness and exposure" said Rodney Clark, Founder of Breakaway Youth. "Beyond exposure, the foundation aims to sustain participation of qualified kids through scholarship funds."

"We are excited to lend our support to the Breakaway Youth Development Program", stated T-Birds General Manager Russ Farwell. "Sena is the perfect Thunderbird to be involved. He relates well with kids and will be a great role model for their program. We look forward to a long successful relationship as this program matures and makes its mark in this community."

The event is targeted at kids from 6 to 15-years-old and will include both off-ice and on-ice instruction. Instructors also include former NHL players Jamie Huscroft and Turner Stevenson. The event is in partnership with the Sno-King Hockey Association and Seattle Junior Hockey Association.
