Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping to continue their home ice winning ways this weekend as they look to keep the pressure on the front running Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
Winners of four straight home games and owners of an impressive 10-0-2-1 record at Westman Place since mid November, the Wheat Kings enter Friday night's game against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders with a record of 35-15-3-1, good for 74 points and second place in the division and third in the Eastern Conference. Brandon currently trails the Blades by eight points, with one game in hand. The Blades host Red Deer Friday night.
While the Wheat Kings have their sights set on top spot in the division, the Raiders enter weekend play tied with Regina and Edmonton for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Friday night is the fourth of six meetings between the Wheat Kings and Raiders. Brandon has won eleven straight games against Prince Albert, dating back to January 12th, 2007.
Brandon will again be without 17-year old right-winger Scott Glennie this weekend as the Winnipeg product sustained a broken left elbow during last Saturday's win over the Hitmen in Calgary. The league's 6th leading scorer will be lost indefinitely.
With Glennie out, expect rookie Mark Stone to remain on a line with veterans Brayden Schenn and Matt Calvert. That line combined for ten points in Tuesday's 5-0 victory over Red Deer. A former fifth round draft choice of the Wheat Kings in the 2007 WHL bantam draft, Stone had a goal and three points on Tuesday and has seven goals and 17 points in 38 games this season.
Friday night's game will feature a special salute to Canadian Forces Base Shilo. A number of displays will be set up throughout the Keystone Centre concourse during the game, giving fans the opportunity to meet and thank those members of the military that continue to put themselves in harms way.
Performing the ceremonial opening face-off Friday night will be CFB Shilo Base Commander Lieutenant-Colonel John Schneiderbaner and Base Chief Warrant Officer Stephen Walsh.
Tickets to Friday and Saturday's game against Edmonton are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
Saturday night is another Brandon Source for Sports - Subway Family Night. The $40 Wheat Kings' Family Pack is available at Brandon Source for Sports.
