Seddon Sensational In 6-1 Isotopes Win
June 1, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Lefty Chris Seddon was superb, tossing the first complete game of the season to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (27-29) to a dominating 6-1 win over the Memphis Redbirds (29-29) Sunday evening at Isotopes Park. The complete game was Seddon's third of his career and the first thrown by an Isotope since Kenny Baugh tossed a complete game against Omaha at The Lab on July 19, 2007.
Seddon (5-3) was masterful from the outset, scattering four hits through eight shutout innings before the Redbirds finally broke through with a run with two outs in the ninth to spoil the shutout. When the final out was recorded, Seddon had allowed just the one run on six hits while walking just three and striking out eight. The south-paw fired 122 pitches, the most by an Isotope this season, 77 of which went for strikes while also coaxing three double-plays. For good measure, the pitcher even notched his first career hit with a base knock in the eighth.
With their starter in control, the Isotopes made sure he got plenty of run support early, scoring four runs in the very first frame. Robert Andino led off the inning with a single before advancing to third on a ground-rule double by Chris Barnwell. After Memphis starter Hugo Castellanos hit John Gall with a pitch to load the bases, he unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Andino to scamper home with the game's first run. Jason Wood then cracked a towering three-run homer to left that gave Albuquerque an early 4-0 advantage.
Albuquerque added to its lead in the fifth thanks again to the long-ball. With one out in the frame, Dallas McPherson smashed his PCL-leading 18th home run to right, giving the 'Topes a 5-0 lead.
McPherson factored in the 'Topes' next scoring rally in the seventh as well, reaching on an error by 'Birds second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir before advancing to second on a walk to Andrew Beattie, and scoring on a single by Paul Hoover to put Albuquerque up 6-0.
The Redbirds finally cracked the scoreboard in the ninth when Chris Duncan led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by David Freese to cut the lead to 6-1, but Seddon would bear down to retire Hoffpauir on a pop-out to second, preserving the complete game gem.
Albuquerque also held its annual Pink Jersey Auction as part of Breast Cancer Awareness festivities at Isotopes Park. A total of $4,340 was raised for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation of Central New Mexico, with an autographed jersey by actor Ray Liotta receiving the top bid of $400. Wood's jersey was the highest garnered by a player, bringing in $300 for the cause.
The Isotopes will try to get their first back-to-back wins since May 17-18 on Monday with right-hander Dallas Trahern (0-5, 9.20) getting the start for Albuquerque against 'Birds righty Mitchell Boggs (5-1, 3.17). Game time is set for 7:05 PM at Isotopes Park.
The 'Topes continue an action-packed homestand tomorrow with their second 50-cent Hot Dog Night of the year. On Tuesday, the Isotopes will wrap up the homestand with a business person's special. Tickets can be purchased at Isotopes Park or any Ticketmaster outlet, www.ticketmaster.com, or Ticketmaster by phone 505-883-7800.
