Beavers Get Four Homers In Win
June 1, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Wade LeBlanc struck out eight in his second consecutive solid outing, and the Portland Beavers got home runs from Chase Headley, Nick Hundley, Chip Ambres and Craig Stansberry in an 8-4 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 6,384 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
LeBlanc (5-4) struck out the side in the first and fanned eight of the first 12 batters he faced to record his highest strikeout total since becoming the third Portland pitcher in eight seasons to set down 11 in a game in his first start on April 7. LeBlanc limited the 51s to a run and two hits in five innings - this after allowing 13 earned runs across 5 2/3 innings over his two previous starts against Las Vegas this season.
Headley hit a solo homer - his 10th of the year - and Hundley launched a two-run clout during a four-run fifth inning. Ambres and Stansberry added late solo shots to help the Beavers widen the gap after Las Vegas (28-29) staged a three-run rally in the seventh.
Edwin Moreno recorded the final out to notch his first save since joining the Beavers from Class AA San Antonio on May 8.
Las Vegas' John Lindsey homered for a sixth time in 10 games against the Beavers this season, clearing the 30-foot-high batter's eye in straightaway center with a fourth-inning solo shot off LeBlanc.
The Beavers (29-26), who have won six of their last seven games with Las Vegas, manufactured a pair of runs in the second inning, loading the bases with two walks and single and getting their first run when starter Jason Johnson hit LeBlanc with a pitch. One batter later, Brett Dowdy's sacrifice fly to right plated Hundley, who earlier singled.
Brian Myrow doubled and Vincent Sinisi drove him in with a soft single to center as part of the four-run fifth inning that gave Portland a 6-1 lead.
Johnson (7-3) was on the losing end of the 51s' fifth straight defeat after giving up six runs and seven hits in his five innings. The loss snapped Johnson's seven-game winning streak that started April 20.
The 51s batted around in the top of the seventh and cut the margin to 6-4, but Portland reliever Adam Bass coaxed a pair of fly outs to limit further damage and end the threat.
The series between the two clubs at PGE Park continues Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Before the game, infielder Ray Chang was transferred to Class AA San Antonio and right-handed pitcher Wilton Lopez was transferred to Portland from the same San Antonio club ... Wilkin Ruan, Angel Chavez and Andy LaRoche - the top three batter in the Las Vegas lineup - combined to strike out six times over the first three innings ... Ambres and Headley share the team lead with 10 home runs each ... six of Lindsey's nine home runs this season have come against Portland.
