Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves came up with a clutch seventh inning as they took down the Akron RubberDucks, 6-4, on Tuesday night at Canal Park.

The SeaWolves took the lead on Akron starter Adam Plutko in the top of the second. Jason Krizan led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a one-out James Robbins opposite-field knock. Krizan scored on a two-out Wade Gaynor single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.

Akron tied the game in the last of the second against Erie starter Michael Fulmer. With one out, Jeremy Lucas doubled and Jordan Smith followed with a two-run home run to right, giving the Ducks a 2-1 edge.

Erie quickly tied the game in the top of the third when Krizan blasted a solo home run over the wall in right center. The home run was his seventh of the season and the hit was his fifth of the series.

The game remained tied until the seventh when the SeaWolves struck against reliever Zach Nuding. Austin Green led off with a single and moved to second on a Gaynor sacrifice bunt. Harold Castro singled to right, plating Green for a 3-2 lead. Wynton Bernard followed with an infield single putting runners on the corners for JaCoby Jones. With the infield in, Jones grounded to short and the Ducks retired Castro at the plate for the second out. Jeff McVaney then stepped in a clobbered a two-out, three-run home run for a 6-2 lead. The home run for McVaney was his third and he extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine straight games.

Akron struck for a run in the eighth to close the gap to three against reliever Slade Smith. Yoxian Medina led off with a double and eventually scored on a Nellie Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

The Ducks got one final run in the ninth against reliever Melvin Mercedes. Ronny Rodriguez led off with a double, moved to third on a fly out to center and scored on a Smith sacrifice fly making it 6-4. Mercedes induced a fly out off the bat of Eric Stamets to end the game, earning his first save in three chances.

Cal Drummond (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings in relief, earning his first Double-A win. He allowed one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Fulmer took the no-decision allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in four innings.

The SeaWolves have now won five straight games against Akron and have taken the season series.

Bernard singled in the seventh inning for his 152nd hit of the season. He is alone in fourth place in SeaWolves history. Bernard is 11 shy and 12 hits away from breaking the SeaWolves single-season hit record which was set by Omar Infante in 2001.
