New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, N.H. - For the second straight night, the Fisher Cats used a late rally to pull ahead of the Portland Sea Dogs. But, unlike Monday night's 9-6 loss, they held on to win 5-2 thanks to a four-run seventh on Tuesday. The victory evened the series up with just two home games remaining for New Hampshire (65-68) at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in 2015.
The Fisher Cats started the scoring early, thanks to consecutive doubles by Dwight Smith, Jr., and K.C. Hobson in the first inning. The two-out knocks gave the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead against Portland starter Mike McCarthy (ND).
Austin Bibens-Dirkx (W; 6-8) carried the lead with few problems through the first five innings before the Sea Dogs (50-86) struck for a two-out run in the sixth. Oscar Tejeda started that rally with a double. He then scored on a single by Keury De La Cruz to even it up at 1-1.
From there, a very busy seventh inning decided the game. Portland took a lead in the top of the frame when Jordan Weems smacked his first Double-A home run. The solo shot put Portland on top, but only for a short spell.
After Bibens-Dirkx finished the inning, the offense got to work. After Simon Mercedes replaced Mike McCarthy on the hill in the bottom of the seventh, Derrick Chung began the inning with a single. He took third on a bloop double by Matt Newman before Emilio Guerrero plated them both with a single for a 3-2 lead.
After a groundout, Jorge Flores made it 4-2 when he brought home Guerrero with a single to left. Hobson then wrapped the inning with another two-out hit to right field to put the lead at 5-2.
Cory Burns (S; 1) recorded the final six outs to record his first save of 2015. He struck out two. Bibens-Dirkx allowed two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings for his sixth victory.
Hobson led the 11-hit attack with a three-hit night. He picked up two more RBIs, giving him four in the series. Smith, Jr., recorded multiple hits for the fourth straight night while Chung was on base three times with a single, a double, and a walk.
There are now just two home games left in the 2015 season. Game three of the series comes on Wednesday night as the Fisher Cats retire the number of Chris Carpenter in a pre-game ceremony. The team will also present the first 2,500 fans with a Carpenter No. 29 poster thanks to Spectrum Marketing Companies. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603)641-2005, and by visiting the box office at the ballpark.
Taylor Cole is on the hill for his final home start on Wednesday against Portland righty Aaron Wilkerson. Tom Gauthier will have the call beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
