Akron RubberDucks News Release

Akron's Jordan Smith homered and drove in three runs, but it wasn't enough to keep the RubberDucks from their fifth straight loss as the Erie SeaWolves walked away with a 6-4 win Tuesday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

With the score tied, 2-2, the SeaWolves (60-75) rallied for four runs in the seventh inning off Akron reliever Zach Nuding (1-2). Harold Castro slapped a one-out, RBI single to give Erie the lead, and Jeff McVaney added a two-out, three-run homer to extend the lead to 6-2. It was McVaney's third of the season.

Mound Presence

The RubberDucks (68-68) wasted a fine starting performance by Adam Plutko, who hurled six innings and scattered five hits and two runs. Plutko walked one and struck out four, and lowered his ERA to 3.05. Erie ace and EL Pitcher of the Year Michael Fulmer was erratic through four innings, leaving early when his pitch count hit 87. He allowed just four hits, including the two-run shot by Smith in the second. SeaWolves right-hander Cal Drummond (1-0) came out of the bullpen to throw three shutout innings to pick up his first AA win.

Duck Tales

Smith made the defensive play of the night when he made a leaping catch of a screaming line drive by Wynton Bernard in left field to end the Erie second and strand three men on base. In the bottom of the second, following a one-out double by Jeremy Lucas, Smith drilled a long homer into the bullpen to give Akron a 2-1 lead. It was his fifth homer of the season. He added a sacrifice fly in the ninth to finish with three RBI on the night. Second baseman Yhoxian Medina made his first start for Akron, and went 2-4, with a single in his first AA at-bat and a double in the eighth.
