
SeaWolves Stumble in Series Finale with Squirrels

The SeaWolves came out on the short end of a pitchers duel on Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park to the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2. The SeaWolves now hit the road for a brief weekend series in Akron.
Erie broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Richmond starter Justin Fitzgerald. Deik Scram led off and reached on an error. With one out, Justin Henry singled putting runners on the corners. Bryan Holaday sent a chopper through the left side, plating Scram for a 1-0 lead. Jamie Johnson followed with a single, scoring Henry, giving the 'Wolves a 2-0 advantage.
The Flying Squirrels cut into the SeaWolves lead in the top of the sixth against Erie starter Brooks Brown. Eliezer Zambrano led off and doubled. A Skyler Stromsmoe sacrifice bunt moved Zambrano to third and he would score on a Francisco Peguero groundout making it 2-1.
Richmond took the lead in the top of the seventh. Roger Kieschnick led off and singled to right. Chris Dominguez doubled down the left field line, scoring Kieschnick, tying the game. Hodges followed with an RBI double, plating Dominguez for a 3-2 Richmond lead. With one out, Sharlon Schoop singled home Hodges for a 4-2 Flying Squirrels lead.
The SeaWolves could not mount a comeback as they were limited to just one hit over the final three innings of the game. Fitzgerald struck out 11 hitters tying a career-high in the winning effort.
Brown (2-6) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings. He retired the first 13 hitters of the game before allowing a hit in the fifth.
The SeaWolves will hit the road for a four-game weekend series at Canal Park against the Akron Aeros.7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Casey Crosby (6-4, 4.08 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Austin Adams (6-8, 3.95 ERA).
