Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Binghamton, New York- Stephen Fife (11-4) just needed to get back to Binghamton. The Sea Dogs starter beat the Mets 5-2 on Wednesday night, his second straight win at NYSEG Stadium. The victory also gave Fife his 11 win of the season, the most of any pitcher in the Eastern League. Portland's offense came through with enough support thanks to home runs from Ryan Dent and Will Middlebrooks. Ryan Khoury also had three hits for the second straight night.
The Sea Dogs nearly missed out on a chance to get an early lead against Mets starter Tobi Stoner (4-5). Tim Federowicz led off the second inning with a double to left field. Mitch Dening moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Oscar Tejeda flied out to shallow left field, preventing Federowicz from scoring. Needing a two out hit, Dent came through with his first Double-A home run to put Portland in front 2-0.
Khoury extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. The Utah native ripped a two-out single to score Dent. However, the inning was cut short when Khoury was caught in between first and second and thrown out in a rundown. Middlebrooks led off the next inning with his 14 home run of the year, a solo shot.
For his part, Fife frustrated the Mets inning after inning. Over the course of his six frames, Binghamton stranded eight runners and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Fife's last win came as part of a doubleheader on July 5 in Binghamton. In that game, he also went six innings, recording a season-high nine strikeouts.
The Mets finally cracked the scoreboard against Charle Rosario. Niuman Romero drove in Binghamton's first run with a two-out single in the seventh inning. Then, Dusty Ryan made it a three-run game with a solo home run in the eighth. Blake Maxwell worked a perfect ninth inning for his 11 save. The win gives Portland three straight series wins and a 5-2 record to finish the road trip.
The Sea Dogs start a brief four-game homestand against the Altoona Curve tomorrow night. After four games at Hadlock, Portland heads back out on the road for seven games in Bowie and Richmond next week. Tomorrow night features Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks and the second Bark in the Park night this season. On July 30, the Sea Dogs will host Picnic in the Park prior to Saturday night's game against the Curve. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
