Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves (41-46) dropped the series finale at NYSEG Stadium 8-6 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies Sunday.
Josh Thole invited home the first SeaWolves run on the starter Justin Dunn in the second inning. The catcher hit a sac fly to left that brought Dominic Ficociello to make it 1-0.
The SeaWolves put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Dunn loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsmen, and then walked Josh Thole to bring in the second Erie run. Simcox batted into a double play, scoring Dominic Ficociello. Cam Gibson legged out an infield single to bring in the final Erie run of the inning, and the Wolves led 4-0 after the top of the 4th.
Binghamton stormed back in the fourth inning on Kyle Funkhouser. Tomas Nido homered to lead off the inning for the Ponies, and then Funkhouser loaded the bases for Andrew Ely. The shortstop clocked a sac fly to left field to bring in the inning's second run. Levi Michael singled another run home, and then Andrew Graham yanked Funkhouser from the contest after just 3.1. Caleb Thielbar also struggled for Erie, allowing two hits and only getting one out on a Joey Terdoslavich sacrifice fly. Joe Navilohn ended the inning after forcing Nido to ground into a fielders choice. After four, Binghamton led 5-4.
The Rumble Ponies scored two more runs on Sandy Baez in the sixth inning. Ely led it off with a walk, and then was doubled in by Kevin Taylor. The Ponies' first baseman reached third on a throwing error on the same play, and came in as an unearned run on a sac fly from Josh Allen. Binghamton was on top 7-4 after the sixth.
The SeaWolves climbed closer in the eighth on Daniel Zamora. Josh Thole singled home Josh Lester for his third RBI of the contest, and Simcox hit into a fielder's choice to allow Sedio to score for Erie to make it 7-6 Binghamton.
The Rumble Ponies added an insurance run on Fernando Perez in the eighth. Kevin Taylor singled home Levi Michael, giving Binghamton the 8-6 lead which they did not give up. Corey Taylor worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save, giving the Ponies the series win.
Funkhouser (4-5) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in just 3.1. Dunn (3-2) won for Binghamton after 5.0 IP, giving up four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
