Akron RubberDucks News Release
Richmond's Aramis Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, forcing in what would become the winning run, as the Flying Squirrels edged the Akron RubberDucks, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
Turning Point
The Flying Squirrels (43-44) loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning and the game tied, 1-1. Garcia was at the plate with a 2-2 count against Ducks righty Argenis Angulo (1-3) when a fastball sailed up and in, grazing the arm of Garcia to force in the go-ahead run. Akron manager Tony Mansolino argued the call with home plate umpire Tom West, but the call stood and Richmond took the lead.
Mound Presence
Triston McKenzie started for the RubberDucks and allowed one run on two hits over six innings. He allowed just a solo homer to Garcia in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Flying Squirrels starter Chase Johnson was also dominant, going five innings and only allowing a solo shot by Bobby Bradley to tie the game in the fifth. Shaun Anderson (6-5) came in after Johnson and worked three scoreless innings to pick up the win in his first relief outing of the season.
Duck Tales
Bradley's homer was his 17thof the season, tying him for second in the league. The Ducks got a pair of singles from Joe Sever, including one in the ninth inning against closer Sam Wolff, but couldn't pull off a comeback to tie it. Connor Marabell and Andrew Calica were hitless, snapping hitting streak of 12 and 10 games, respectively.
