ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve used three straight hits to begin the ninth inning to take a 3-2 walk-off win over the Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona, PA.
With the defeat, the Thunder finish the unofficial first half of the season with a 49-39 record, 0.5 games behind the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Brody Koerner retired six-of-seven batters across his first two innings of relief before the Curve began their ninth inning rally to victory. Will Craig singled to right to start the inning and Jordan George singled on a ground ball back through the middle to put runners on the corners. Jordan Hill singled home the game's winning run with a single to shallow center to give the Curve the series win over the Thunder.
Domingo Acevedo went six innings in a starting role for his longest start since June 26, 2017 (15 starts). The right-hander began his outing by striking out the side in order in his first inning of work and retired the first eight batters he faced. After the Curve managed a lead-off walk in the fourth, Acevedo retired the next six batters he faced.
Altoona briefly took the lead in the sixth inning against Acevedo. Alfredo Reyes singled to start the inning and stole second and third base to work himself into scoring position. With men on the corners and one out, Bryan Reynolds drove in Reyes with a sacrifice fly to right. After Acevedo appeared to get out of the inning with a groundball off the bat of Will Craig, Mandy Alvarez's throw pulled first baseman Billy Fleming off the bag and let Ke'Bryan Hayes come around to score and take a 2-1 lead.
The Thunder tied the game in the seventh by working back-to-back walks with one out and getting an RBI single from Jorge Saez off of Curve reliever Sean Keselica.
The Thunder managed just five hits in Sunday's loss and dropped the five-game series to Altoona, 3-2.
