Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, Miss. â Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and head coach Bob Woods announced today that the team has traded veteran center Russ Guzior (GOO-zee-uhr) to the Peoria Rivermen for veteran center John "Stumpy" Evangelista (ih-vahn-jehl-LIHST-ah).
Guzior, 31, finishes his Mississippi tenure by tallying one goal, three assists and 17 penalty minutes in 15 games. A native of Chicago, Guzior started the campaign with Quad City of the United Hockey League before being signed as a free agent by the Sea Wolves on November 9. The 5-foot-10 and 190-pound Guzior was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 11th round, 281st overall, in the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Evangelista, 29, returns to the Sea Wolves after playing the past five seasons with the team from 1999-2004. A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, Evangelista was acquired by Peoria off waivers on January 15. The 5-foot-9 and 185-pound Evangelista signed a free agent contract in the offseason with the Louisiana IceGators, where he tallied one goal, four assists and 44 penalty minutes in 31 games.
In 1999-00, Evangelista was selected as Mississippi's Best New Player and was named the Sea Wolves winner of the Ralph Coburn Community Service Award in 2002-03. In his seventh professional season, "Stumpy" remains the only player in Mississippi team history to score four goals during regulation time, accomplishing the feat on January 8, 2000 versus Birmingham.
"Stumpy" and the Sea Wolves take to the ice at 7:35 p.m. on Friday against the Augusta Lynx at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Promotions include Military 2-for-1, sponsored by Keesler Federal Credit Union, which offers all military personnel, active or retired, two tickets for the price of one by showing military identification at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office.
