San Diego Looks To Extend Winning Streak To Five

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls attempt to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games and move into a third place tie in the West Division when they take on the Las Vegas Wranglers tonight at the Sports Arena.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Wranglers have met three times so far this season with San Diego holding a 2-1-0 series edge. The two teams will clash four more times during the regular season. San Diego and Las Vegas met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 6-2-2 edge.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting an 8-3-2 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 4-1-0 all-time against the Wranglers at the Sports Arena.

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (JAN. 13 @ LV): The Gulls scored three times in a 63-second span during the first period and netted the game-winner late in the third en route to a 4-3 win in Vegas. Andrew Canzanello, Darren Clark and Chris Lynch netted back-to-back-to-back goals late in the first period, but the Wranglers cut the deficit to one with two straight goals in the second period. Colin Shields scored what proved to be the game-winner late in third, just before Las Vegas made it a one-goal game again.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (19-11-4) enter the day tied with the Alaska Aces for fourth in the West Division, nine points behind the first-place Bakersfield Condors and seven points back of the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs... San Diego, however is only two points out of third and has games in hand on all contending teams in the West... The Gulls have played three fewer games than Bakersfield, Long Beach and Fresno; two fewer games than Alaska, Idaho and Las Vegas... San Diego has won four games in a row, outscoring its opponents 16-10 during that span... The Blue and Orange is 12-3-2 at home this season and 7-8-2 on the road... They have outscored its opponents 67-47 at the Sports Arena...

OTHER NOTES: Curtis Brown is in the midst of a seven-game point streak, notching 11 points in that span (3g, 8a)... Brian Gornick has 13 points (9g, 4a) in his last 14 games... Sylvain Deschatelets is in the midst of a five-game point streak, notching eight points during that span (2g, 6a)... San Diego now has seven players out with injuries: Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Sean Murphy (broken thumb), Guillaume Fournier (concussion-like symptoms), Trevor Koenig (elbow tendonitis), Sean O'Connor (charley horse), Darren Clark (sprained ankle) and Max Birbraer (shoulder injury)... Evgueni Nourislamov, who's missed the last nine games with a knee sprain, will return to the lineup tonight... The Gulls have allowed 24 power-play goals in its last 18 games...

LAS VEGAS UPDATE: Las Vegas (16-13-3) begins the day seventh in the West Division with 38 points, four behind the Gulls and Aces for the fourth and final playoff spot... The Wranglers are one point behind the sixth place Idaho Steelheads, who host Bakersfield tonight... Las Vegas has dropped three of its last four games after racking up a five-game winning streak... Out of their 36 games this season, the Wranglers have played 23 one-goal games (9-10-4)... Marc Magliarditi is eighth in the ECHL with a 2.28 goals-against average and is tied for fourth in the league with a.934 save percentage... Dustin Johner leads the club with 29 points (15g, 14a)... Las Vegas set a team record Saturday in Bakersfield for being assessed 15 minor penalties...

TRANSACTIONS: Left-winger Wes Rypien was signed today, along with defenseman Pierre Dufour... Fournier and Koenig both remain on the seven-day injured list... Murphy and Shockey both remain on 30-day injured reserve...
