Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – The Long Beach Ice Dogs look like a team intent on hunting down the Bakersfield Condors for the National Conference West Division lead this past week and have been doing it at the expense of the injury riddled expansion franchise Victoria Salmon Kings. On Tuesday they looked no different defeating the Salmon Kings 5-2.

Victoria opened the first period on fire and dominated the play. Jason Hegberg and Ryan Wade set up Blue Bennefield's power-play goal at 6:09 of the stanza and it looked as if the Salmon Kings were on their way to ending this recent Shakespearian tragedy.

At 17:02 the Ice Dogs answered back when Dan Watson stepped in over the Salmon Kings blue line and blasted a slap shot past the left pad of Kelly Shields. Shields made 28 saves in his home debut and played solid between the pipes making several nice saves.

With three seconds left in the first the Long Beach defense broke down in front of Chris Madden and the Salmon Kings capitalized. Ryan Finnerty worked the puck from behind the net and put it in front to a wide open Rob Voltera. Voltera's fourteenth beat Madden high over the glove on a shot that Voltera made sure Madden had no chance on.

The score remained 2-1 until 17:38 of the second period. With Ryan Finnerty in the box for slashing the Ice dogs power-play went to work. Chris Kenady and Nathan Martz broke down the Salmon Kings penalty killing unit and opened up Evan Cheverie at the side of the net. Cheverie banged the puck past Shields stretching out to make the save.

At 19:33 the Ice Dogs turned the tables and they would never look back. With the Salmon Kings newest defenseman Adam Campbell in the box for another slashing penalty, Ice Dogs leading goal scorer Chris Kenady added his twenty-first of the season to the score sheet.

The Ice Dogs went on to net two more in the third from Nathan Martz and a power-play marker from Marco Rosa. The trio of Chevarie, Kenady and Martz continued to exact their vengeance on the Salmon Kings defense combining for nine points on the night.

To the credit of Victoria they started the night on a tear. With six injured players watching from the Bear's rafters, the team on the ice seemed intent on putting their difficulties to bed. The score on Tuesday told a different story though. The Salmon Kings and the Ice Dogs go right back at each other on Wednesday at the Bear Mountain Arena, game time is 7:00 p.m. PST.
