Sea Dogs Win Second Straight Over Fisher Cats

(Manchester, NH)- For the past month and a half, Blake Maxwell has been one of the best pitchers on Portland's staff. On Saturday night, he continued to pitch well, allowing two runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings, as the Sea Dogs picked up a 5-2 win at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
Both starting pitchers were tremendous, keeping the game scoreless through the first five innings of play. Kyle Drabek went those five innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing one hit and four walks, while striking out four.
Once New Hampshire went to the bullpen, the Sea Dogs' offense came to life. With David Purcey in the game, Chih-Hsien Chiang and Nate Spears started the sixth inning with consecutive singles. After a pair of outs, Ryan Lavarnway drew a walk, loading the bases, and taking Purcey out of the game. Trystan Magnuson took over for Purcey, and immediately allowed back-to-back two-run singles to Ray Chang and Luis Exposito.
The Fisher Cats also got on the board in the sixth inning, as they cut Portland's lead in half. Adam Calderone reached base with a one out infield single, and was driven around on David Cooper's two-run homer to right field.
Portland got one of those runs back in the seventh. With one out, Chih-Hsien Chiang and Nate Spears connected on consecutive doubles, with Spears' hit producing the run.
Blake Maxwell (6-0) was victorious once again, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, five hits, and one walk, while striking out six. Maxwell has won 10 of 11 decisions this season, and 17 of his last 21 dating back to 2009. David Purcey (0-1) was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Daniel Turpen got his first save with the Sea Dogs, pitching a perfect ninth inning.
The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats will conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35. Kyle Weiland (5-8, 4.72) will make the start for Portland, while Zach Stewart (8-3, 3.73) will get the call for New Hampshire.
