New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats had a roster transaction in the middle of their Eastern League game last night against visiting Bowie, in which they lost RHP Loek Van Mil. The unusual timing was caused by the Rock Cats' parent club - the Minnesota Twins - announcing a trade with the California Angels at 8:09 PM that, by extension, involved the New Britain player while the evening's action was in progress.
The 25-year-old Van Mil, at 7'1" the tallest player in all of professional baseball, was watching the early-inning action from the Rock Cats bullpen when he got word to come into the New Britain clubhouse. It was there that he was notified that the Twins, to make room on their 40-Man Major League roster for LHP Brian Fuentes, had removed him from that list and designated him for assignment. Every other MLB team now has up to 10 days to place a claim for Van Mil's services.
The hard-throwing Van Mil is a native of Oss, Netherlands who was signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted Free Agent in July of 2005. Now in his fifth year of pro ball, Van Mil was in his second season in New Britain. In 2010, he made 23 relief appearances for the Rock Cats and departs Connecticut with a 1-2-1 mark and a 6.37 ERA.
The Rock Cats expressed their appreciation to the gentlemanly Van Mil for his service in New Britain.
