New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Steve Singleton hammered a double down the right field line to knock in Evan Bigley in the bottom of the ninth to give the Rock Cats a 6-5 walk-off win over Bowie on Saturday night.
The Rock Cats broke out the bats for 16 hits on the night, including a game-high four by Bigley, but it was Singleton's double in the ninth that proved to be the most important. Bigley reached base safely on a fielding error by second baseman Carlos Rojas before Singleton lined a two-base hit into right that scored Bigley for the game-winner. It was the second walk-off victory at the hands of Singleton on the season.
Bowie got on the board first when Joel Guzman led off the second inning with a single to left and came around to score on Caleb Joseph's line drive base hit to right field. The Rock Cats answered back in the bottom of the inning when Bigley crushed a double off the left field wall and scored on Jeff Howell's two-out double to tie the game, 1-1.
Xavier Avery put the Baysox back on top with a solo homer to right field off Michael McCardell with one out in the third. Not to be outdone, the âCats tied the game back up in the bottom of the inning once again. Ben Revere led off the bottom of the third with a single. With one out, Revere stole second and then third with Joe Benson at the plate. Benson then singled back to pitcher Richard Zagone, allowing Revere to score from third.
The Rock Cats took its first lead of the night by breaking out for three runs in the fifth inning. Benson led off with a double. Bigley delivered a one out single to right but Benson was thrown out at the plate. Bigley ended up at second on the throw and came around to score when Singleton lined a single into right field to put the âCats in top, 3-2. Mark Dolenc followed with a two-run shot over the center field wall to extend the lead.
McCardell limited the Baysox to two runs on three hits through five innings. He struck out six before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Blake Martin took over to start the sixth and was greeted by a Ryan Adams double. Guzman followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners before Joseph Mahoney grounded into a force out back to the mound that scored Adams.
The Baysox continued to climb back into the game in the seventh. Greg Miclat led off the inning with a double and Tucker drew a walk before Avery dropped down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position. Martin was lifted in place of Carlos Gutierrez, who served up a two-run single to Rojas that tied the game, 5-5.
Revere finished the game with three stolen bases and now leads the team and ranks third in the Eastern League with 34 on the season. Gutierrez (4-8) tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings in relief as Martin was charged with the runs in the eighth and picked up the win.
Bob McCrory (2-3) suffered the loss for the Baysox.
