Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Bryan Mata worked through 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out seven, leading the way as the Portland Sea Dogs (12-4, 42-43) shutout the Somerset Patriots (8-8, 52-33) in a 5-0 win on Friday in front of a sold-out crowd of 7,368 at Hadlock Field.
The first three frames were an all-out pitcher's duel. Mata allowed just two hits over the first three innings, keeping Somerset scoreless over that time. On the other side, Patriots starter Mitch Spence was perfect, setting Portland down in order through the first nine batters.
The Sea Dogs offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Spence still on the mound. David Hamilton got things started with a one-out single and Christian Koss blasted a two-run homer to center, giving the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. Izzy Wilson walked and stole second base. Tyreque Reed made it consecutive walks and Kole Cottam drove in Wilson with a single, making it a 3-0 lead. Cameron Cannon beat out an infield single, plating Tyreque Reed on the play, capping off a four-run inning with a 4-0 lead.
Once again both offenses went quiet until the eighth inning when Portland plated an insurance run against Somerset reliever Barrett Loseke. Hamilton collected a one-out single and stole second. He preceded to steal third, where the throw from Patriots catcher Austin Wells bounced into left, scoring Hamilton to make it a 5-0 lead. Brendan Nail entered for the ninth, putting away the Patriots and tying the series with a 5-0 victory.
Mata (1-0, 0.55 ERA) earned his first win with the Sea Dogs this season, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing five hits, one walk, and struck out seven. Spence (3-5, 5.33 ERA) tossed 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits, walking two, and striking out two in his fifth loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Patriots play the penultimate game of the series on Saturday with a 6:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Portland sends RHP Brian Van Belle (3-1, 4.29 ERA) to the mound against Somerset RHP Sean Boyle (6-4, 4.67 ERA).
