SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS TO SOMERSET - The Portland Sea Dogs fell to the Somerset Patriots yesterday 8-2. Four runs came around to score for the Patriots in the top of the second inning against Sea Dogs starter Dylan Spacke. Jesus Bastidas led off with a double and Blake Perkins drove him in with a two-bagger of his own, giving Somerset a 1-0 lead. One out later, Michael Beltre singled, plating Perkins to increase

a two-run homer, capping off a four-run inning with a 4-0 lead. Somerset drove in two more runs in the top of the fourth with Portland reliever Zach Bryant on the mound. Beltre led off the inning with a solo homer, making it a 5-0 game. Two outs later, Anthony Volpe

a solo shot, adding to their score, 6-0. The Sea Dogs broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with Patriots starter Luis Medina on the bump. Tyler Dearden and Ricardo Cubillan both connected with one-out base hits, putting runners on first and third. Alex Binelas scored Dearden on a single, making it a 6-1 score. Christian Koss came through with a two-out RBI single, bringing in Cubillan, cutting into Somerset's lead, 6-2. The Patriots added even more to their lead in the eighth inning with Perkins' first homer of the night, bumping their lead up to 7-2. Perkins went deep again in the top of the ninth inning, expanding the lead to 8-2. Portland couldn't get any offense going in the bottom of the ninth, falling to Somerset 8-2.

SECOND HALF POWER-UP - Portland hitters mashed 50 home runs during the first half of Eastern League play this season, landing them last in the league for round-trippers. To start the second half, the Sea Dogs have led the way in terms of power numbers, launching 22 homers over the first 14 games. Home runs helped fuel their eight-game winning streak, hitting 17 of their 22 this half during the streak.

HAMILTON EXTENDS STREAK - David Hamilton has brought his on-base streak to nine games. Dating back to July 3, Hamilton has gone 8-for-30 (.267) with two doubles, two home runs, five walks, and three strikeouts while tallying a .405 on-base percentage. While on base, Hamilton has stolen four bags and scored nine runs over the last eight games.

JAY GROOME IS PROMOTED - Lefty Jay Groome was promoted to AAA Worcester yesterday. In his second season with the Sea Dogs, Groome was 3-4 with a 3.52 ERA. He tossed 76.2 innings for the Sea Dogs and allowed 33 runs (30 earned) on 58 hits while walking 38 and striking out 81. Groome is currently ranked as the No. 11 prospect in Boston's system according to MLB Pipeline.

THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 16, 2008 - John Otness picked up a Double-A career- high 4 RBI in Portland's 9-5 win at New Britain on Monday afternoon. Otness clocked a 2-run double during Portland's 5-run first inning and clubbed a 2-run homer in the fifth. Mickey Hall provided the game-winning RBI with a solo homer over the center-field wall in the fourth inning.



PITCHING MATCHUP - Bryan Mata is set to start tonight for the Sea Dogs. Mata last pitched July 9th at Binghamton and tossed 4.0 innings allowing one run (unearned) on one hit while walking five and striking out seven. He is currently ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Red Sox system according to MLB Pipeline. He is the second-highest pitching prospect behind Brayan Bello.
