Ortiz Homers Baysox Past Burns, RubberDucks, 2-1
July 15, 2022 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron right-hander Tanner Burns pitched a season-long six innings, but he allowed two solo home runs to Bowie shortstop Joey Ortiz, and Baysox right-hander Garrett Stallings worked the final six scoreless innings of his team's 2-1 win, as Akron lost a season-high fifth straight game at Prince George's Stadium Friday night.
Turning Point
In a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, Burns allowed a leadoff single by center fielder Colton Cowser. After third baseman Cesar Prieto grounded into a fielder's choice, he tried to steal second base and was caught by catcher Eric Rodríguez throwing to second baseman Daniel Schneemann. Ortiz then hit his second home run of the game to left field off of Burns, giving Bowie a 2-1 lead. Three different Baysox have had two-homer performances in the last three games.
Mound Presence
Burns worked around three hits through the first three innings, before Ortiz hit a one-out, game-tying solo home run in the fourth. Burns allowed a season-high seven hits but no walks with two strikeouts. The two home runs against him were a career high and doubled the season total against him to four. Right-hander Brett Daniels worked around a walk and struck out one batter in two scoreless innings. RubberDucks pitchers have held Bowie hitless in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position the last three games, but the Baysox have hit eight homers in that span and have 10 in the first four games of the series. Akron had entered the series Wednesday allowing the league's fewest home runs (71).
Duck Tales
Akron scored its run off right-hander Brenan Hanifee in the second inning, when left fielder Julian Escobedo singled to right field, stole second base and reached third base on catcher Maverick Handley's throwing error. After Rodríguez walked, Schneemann grounded an RBI single to right field, giving the RubberDucks a 1-0 lead. After that, Akron had only two more hits, as Stallings set down 14 in a row in one stretch and faced one batter over the minimum the last six innings.
Notebook
Escobedo has hit safely in each of the first four games of the series, going 5-for-9...Both teams are hitting .125 in the series with runners in scoring position (Akron 3-for-24, Bowie 2-for-16)...Akron has lost five straight games for the first time since June 24-29, 2021 (four to Erie, one to Bowie)...The Baysox lead the season series, 8-2...The RubberDucks are 12-15 in one-run games...Game Time: 1:52 (Akron's quickest nine-inning game this season)...Attendance: 2,463.
