Scrappers Win in Extras Again

For the second night in a row, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (13-18) walked off in extra innings against the Staten Island Yankees (18-13). The Scrappers won 2-1 in 12 innings at Eastwood Field on Wednesday night.

Both teams scored in the third inning. For Staten Island, Drew Bridges doubled to right. He later scored on an RBI single for Jake Hernandez.

Silento Sayles singled for the Scrappers in the bottom of the ninth. Mark Mathias singled to right to score Sayles.

The game went into the 12th inning. With two outs, Daniel Salters reached on an error by Jhalan Jackson in right field. Salters ended up on third base. Still with two outs, Jodd Carter popped up to shallow right field. Thairo Estrada and Jackson came in toward the line, and the ball went off Estrada's glove to allow Salters to score.

Mathias extends his hitting streak to five games. In those five games, he is 12-for-23 with a double, two triples, and a home run. Emmanuel Tapia went 0-for-4, snapping a six-game hitting streak. Salters extended his hit streak to five games.

Jared Robinson left the game in a tie game. Robinson went six innings giving up five hits, while striking out four. Mahoning Valley had 12 strikeouts. Matt Esparza struck out the side in the seventh. Cortland Cox (3-0) earned the win, going three innings, allowing one hit, and striking out 13. Jonny Drozd (0-2) takes the loss, despite allowing just one hit and striking out four in three and two-thirds innings.

The Scrappers have won four of their last five, and go for the series sweep on Thursday night against the Yankees at 7:05.
