Vermont Back In Win Column With 6-2 Victory Over Auburn

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and reliever Kevin Ferreras tossed 3 1/3 hitless innings to earn the win as Vermont snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Auburn Doubledays Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

A night after being shutout on six hits by the Doubledays, Vermont scored two runs on five hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Steven Pallares led off with an infield single and scored on an one-out RBI double down the rightfield line from Mikey White, who later scored on a Seong-min Kim two-out RBI single. Auburn tied the game in the third when they put together four of its six hits on the night to score a pair of runs, including RBI singles from Victor Robles and David Kerian.

Ferreras (2-2) came on in relief of starter Kyle Friedrichs with two outs in the third and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases before getting out of the inning with a strikeout, He then set down the Doubledays in order in each of the next three innings to retire 10 straight batters after the walk. Andrew Tomasovich then tossed two scoreless innings and Corey Miller walked the first batter of the ninth before getting a double play and groundout to end the game.

The Lake Monsters took the lead for good in the fifth as Richie Martin and Mikey White had back-to-back one-out singles, then scored as Chris Iriart increased his team-leading RBI total to 26 with a two-run double to rightcenter. Iriart would score two batters later on a Seth Brown RBI single for a 5-2 lead. The Lake Monsters added another run in the eighth on a Trace Loehr RBI single.

White, Brown, Loehr and Skye Bolt each had two hits as Vermont finished with 12 hits overall, while Robles was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Doubledays. Starter Taylor Guilbeau (0-1) allowed five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for Auburn (13-18).

Vermont (13-18) will wrap up the three-game series with the Doubledays on Thursday at 7:05 pm as the Lake Monsters celebrate United Way Volunteer Appreciation Night. The homestand will then continue through the weekend with a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers.
