Black Bears Extend Winning Streak to Four Games with 5-3 Win over Brooklyn

The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-3 after scoring the go ahead runs in the eighth inning on Tuesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, the Black Bears extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 15-16 this season while Brooklyn falls to 18-12 on the season with the loss.

The teams started the game off scoreless until the third inning when Brooklyn drove in the first run of the game on a double down the right field line. The Cyclones got another run in the sixth inning off of a solo shot to left field by 3B David Thompson before scoring again in the sixth on another RBI double. The Black Bears used the sixth inning to get even with the Cyclones starting off with an RBI single by LF Ty Moore, scoring 2B Kevin Kramer who led the inning off with a single through the right side. RF Logan Hill would score from third base on a throwing error when Moore swiped second and the ball sailed into center field. 3B Daniel Arribas then stepped into the box with two outs and delivered a single up the middle, scoring Hill and evening the score at 3-3.

Hill led the eighth inning off with a double to deep left center and then later scored when 1B Albert Baur ripped an RBI single to left center to give West Virginia a 4-3 advantage. The Black Bears didn't stop there and added an insurance run on an single up the middle from DH Maximo Rivera, scoring Baur who advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch. RP Julio Eusebio entered the game to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season and secure the win for the Black Bears.

SP Bret Helton had a solid outing, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing only two runs (earned) and striking out three. RP Nick Hibbing entered the game in the sixth inning and earned the win (1-0) after allowing only one run and scattering three hits. The Black Bears had four different players to each record an RBI while Hill and Rivera each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Black Bears return to action Today, July 21 as they face the Brooklyn Cyclones in the second game of the series. P Dario Agrazal will be on the mound for West Virginia with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. Wednesday is Polish Heritage Night at Monongalia County Ballpark where there will be Polish themed food and a celebration of Polish heritage at the ballpark all evening.
