Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BATAVIA, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (15-16) won their second consecutive game over the Batavia Muckdogs (9-22) in a wild game Wednesday night 7-6. The Tigers have won three in a row and clinched their first series win since they won two out of three against Vermont at the beginning of the month. Batavia has now lost three games in a row.
Connecticut struck first with three runs in the first inning against Muckdogs starter Gabriel Castellanos (1-4). First basemen Corey Baptist (1-4, RBI, R), right fielder Tanner Donnels (2-4, 2 RBI) and third basemen Steven Fuentes all drove in runs in the frame. The Tigers then added single runs in each of the next two innings and held a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Batavia scored their first run in the third and then exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. In the frame the first three batters reached base and all three scored. With starter Sandy Baez on the mound centerfielder Stone Garrett (2-4, R) singled and scored on a double by first basemen Brad Haynal making it 5-2. The following batter was designated hitter Roy Morales and he doubled as well to make it 5-3.
The inning was far from over. Right fielder Galvi Moscat (2-4, R, RBI) drove in a run and another scored on an error and just like that the game was tied. Still with just one out in the inning second basemen Giovanny Alfonzo produced a sacrifice fly giving Batavia their first lead at 6-5.
The game remained the same until the sixth when designated hitter Cam Gibson launched a solo home run tying the game. Connecticut then scored a run in the top of the eighth without the aid of a hit to take a 7-6 lead.
Drew Smith (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Connecticut. After throwing two perfect innings Smith had to pitch out of a bases loaded jam with one out and did so by getting a strikeout and pop out. Jake Shull (SV 3) finished the game in the ninth.
Steve Farnworth (1-2) was the tough luck loser for Batavia as he worked two innings without allowing a hit but walked two and allowed an unearned to cross the plate.
Connecticut will play at Batavia tomorrow in the final game of a three game series. The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
