Morning Start Doesn't Phase 'Cats in 5-4 Win over Lowell

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
LOWELL, MA - Antonio Nunez, Cesar Carrasco, and Bobby Wernes each posted multi-hit games, while Adam Whitt pitched the last 1.2 innings to earn his first pro save, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Lowell Spinners 5-4 in a game that began at 11:05 a.m. at Edward A. LeLacheur Park, in Lowell, Mass., on Wednesday.
Although the host Spinners struck first with a run in the bottom of the second, the 'Cats offense still made noise early, tying the game in the top of the third when Bryan Muniz hit a double to deep centerfield to drive in Nunez. They then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the next inning, when Richard Gonzalez drove home Pat Porter with an RBI double to left field, then scored along with Johnny Sewald on a Lowell error.
After Lowell cut the 'Cats lead to 4-3 with runs in the fourth and fifth frames, Nunez led off the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then while running on a pitch to Carrasco, scored from second on an infield single to stretch the score to 5-3.
After the Spinners trimmed the 'Cats lead to a single run once more in the bottom of the seventh, Lowell threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, putting runners on first and second base with only one out.
However, Whitt then entered the game, and induced two consecutive groundouts to strand two base runners aboard, sending the game into the ninth inning with Tri-City still ahead 5-4.
That's where the score stood heading into the bottom of the ninth, when Whitt rebounded from a walk to the leadoff batter by retiring the next three Spinners on a ground out, a pop out, and a strikeout, to cement the win for the ValleyCats.
Earning the win for the 'Cats was left-handed reliever Steve Naemark (1-0), who struck out one batter, while allowing only one run on one hit in two innings.
With the victory, Tri-City tied Lowell at the top of the New York-Penn League Stedler Division Standings with a 17-15 record heading into Thursday's series finale. Getting the start for the ValleyCats in the third game of this three-game set will be RHP Trent Thornton (1-0, 3.66), with LHP Luis Ramos (1-1, 4.91) on the mound for the Spinners.
