Scranton Takes Rubber Match, 9-3, at McCoy

(Pawtucket, RI) - The Scranton RailRiders used a trio of three-run frames to pull by the Pawtucket Red Sox, 9-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series in front of 8,538 fans on Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.
The PawSox (39-38) got out to a fast start in the finale of their eight-game homestand. Henry Owens (5-4) struck out the side in the top of the first and Pawtucket brought home two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Scranton starter Diego Moreno walked Brock Holt, hit Ryan Hanigan with a pitch and surrendered a single to Jantzen Witte, loading the bases with no outs in the opening frame.
Two batters later, Ramos delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Holt with the first run of the game. Ramos recorded an RBI in his fourth straight plate appearance dating to Saturday.
The next batter, Ryan Court, lined a single to left that reloaded the bases. A passed ball allowed Hanigan to score the second run of the inning.
Holt made his sixth rehabilitation start on Pawtucket's homestand, playing nine innings in left field for the second time in 24 hours.
He followed a 2-for-3 performance on Saturday with a 3-for-4 game on Sunday. At one point over the two-day stretch, Holt reached base in seven consecutive plate appearances.
"Today was a good day, probably the best so far," said Holt. "It was good to get out there on a short break after last night's game and still feel pretty good."
In addition to his first-inning run, he lined a single to right in the second inning, grounded a single into left in the fourth and flared a single to center in the ninth.
"If you've watched him these last few days, you wouldn't have even known anything had happened," said manager Kevin Boles. "Today was a big step for him."
In that fourth inning, Hanigan, playing in the fourth straight game on his rehab assignment, delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly against reliever Tyler Webb (3-0).
Hanigan went 1-for-3 as the designated hitter with a groundball single in the second inning.
Holt and Hanigan are both scheduled to take tomorrow off before resuming their rehab assignments on Tuesday in Rochester.
The game turned in the third inning when the leadoff hitter Pete Kozma fouled a 3-2 pitch off the facemask of the home plate umpire, Ryan Clark. Clark was forced to leave the game, forcing a 15-minute delay.
Owens, who retired six of seven batters over the first two frames, would allow five runs on four walks and six hits over his final two-plus innings of work.
After Kozma walked, Diaz pushed a bunt past the mound and towards the right side of the infield. Court attempted a behind-the-back throw but it sailed well over the reach of the first baseman Chris Marrero, which allowed Kozma and Diaz to advance into scoring postion.
Ben Gamel scored Kozma with an RBI groundout and Aaron Judge dunked a high fly ball a foot inside the right field line for an RBI triple that scored Diaz.
Tyler Austin followed with a flare into shallow right field that went off the glove of Court for an RBI single that gave the RailRiders a 3-2 lead.
With the game tied, 3-3, Scranton (45-32) put up its second three-spot in the fifth inning.
Owens walked Judge and surrendered a single to Sanchez before he was relieved by Wesley Wright.
Tyler Austin drilled a two-run double past Holt in left field and later scored on a wild pitch.
The RailRiders increased their 6-3 lead to 9-3 in the seventh inning.
Cesar Puello recorded an RBI single and Pete Kozma capped the final three-run frame with a two-run double to center field.
Pat Light did not allow a run in the eighth or ninth inning to extend his scoreless streak to 13 straight innings.
The game lasted three hours and 42 minutes, the longest nine-inning contest of the season for the PawSox.
Pawtucket has dropped 17 of its last 21 meetings with Scranton in Rhode Island dating to 2014.
The PawSox head on the road for a quick three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings beginning tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Pawtucket righthander Aaron Wilkerson (3-1, 2.12) is scheduled to take the mound against Rochester lefty Pat Dean (1-4, 4.07). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins at 6:35 p.m.
The PawSox will return home for a four-game, holiday-weekend series against the Columbus Clippers on Thursday. Friday, Saturday and Sunday's contests will all feature post-game fireworks shows.
