Hens Muster Just Three Hits as Chiefs Take Series
June 26, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Chiefs got to each pitcher manager Lloyd McClendon threw out there on Sunday, as Syracuse came away with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Hens to take the series. Syracuse led for the entirety of the game, with the only Toledo offense coming in the fifth.
The Chiefs, as they did in each game of the series, were the first to light up the runs column of the scoreboard. Trea Turner welcomed Hens starter Buck Farmer to NBT Bank Stadium by taking his 1-1 offering over the fence in left-center to make it 1-0 just one batter into the Chiefs lineup. Turner was back at it again in the third when he doubled down the left field line with one out. Tyler Collins, however, misplayed the ball and allowed it to get past him. This gave Turner the opportunity to come all the way around to score and make it 2-0.
Jordanny Valdespin attempted to get the Hens back into the game when he tripled to lead off the fifth. Miguel Gonzalez then grounded out to bring him in and cut the deficit to just one run.
This would be the only damage that Chiefs starter A.J. Cole would allow, though, as he would settle back in and continue through the seventh. He finished with just one run on three hits and eight strikeouts on the day. The Hens were held to just three hits, with Collins and Casey McGehee accounting for the other two.
As if Cole was not helping himself enough, the Syracuse offense answered back and then some. Caleb Ramsey led off the fifth with a single and was then sacrificed over to second by Jose Lazada. Brian Goodwin grounded to Tyler Bortnick, who booted the ball and allowed Ramsey to cross and make it 3-1.
Farmer pitching into the fifth, but was relieved with two outs for Angel Nesbitt. His final line included 5.2 innings pitched and three runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Chiefs were far from done, as they would go on to add three more in the seventh. Turner stayed hot with another single which was followed by a single by Steve Lombardozzi, Jr. that chased Nesbitt for Blaine Hardy. Matt Skole added yet another single - this one scoring Turner and ending Hardy's night before he could record an out. Preston Guilmet entered and picked up a fielder's choice before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Jason Martinson that brought in Skole and made it 6-1 in favor of Syracuse.
While the Hens' offense still showed no signs of life, the Chiefs added two more in the eighth off of Guilmet. Turner became the first man on by drawing a walk. Guilmet got Lombardozzi to ground into a fielder's choice, but Goodwin blasted a 2-runner to right to make it 8-1. The Hens went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to drop the series finale.
Fifth Third Field comes back to life on Monday when the Hens return for a three-game set with Norfolk before playing five with Indianapolis. First pitch will be at 7:05p on Monday.
