Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (44-32) won their second straight over the Durham Bulls (34-43), 7-1 on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Pigs took a 1-0 lead in the third when J.P. Crawford reached with a two-out double and scored on Nick Williams' RBI double.
In the top of the fourth, Andrew Knapp got on base with a one-out single, advanced to third on a double by Brock Stassi and scored on Darnell Sweeney's RBI groundout to extend the IronPigs lead to 2-0.
Durham cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fifth as J.P. Arencibia led off with a single, advanced to second on a single and later scored on Juniel Querecuto's RBI single.
Pigs starter Anthony Vasquez (1-0) gave up the one run on seven hits while walking two and fanning seven in 6.1 IP.
Knapp (3-3, R) got on base in the top of the sixth with a one-out single, advanced to third on a double and later scored when Carlos Alonso drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Pigs a 3-1 advantage.
Bulls starter Justin Marks (2-6) was tagged with the three runs on six hits to go along with three walks and 11 strikeouts in 5.1 IP.
Darin Ruf's sac fly in the top of the seventh gave the visitors a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Darnell Sweeney scored a run on a throwing error charged to RHP Eddie Gamboa (2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K) and Crawford (2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) plated a run with an RBI single to extend the Pigs lead to 6-1.
Alonso drew a bases-loaded walk once again in the top of the ninth to give the IronPigs a 7-1 advantage.
RHP Frank Herrmann (1.2 IP, H, 3 K) and RHP Colton Murray (1.0 IP, 2 K) each had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. as RHP Jake Thompson (6-5, 3.09) will be on the bump for the IronPigs against Bulls RHP Jacob Faria (1-6, 4.21 in AA). This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
