Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Pawtucket, R.I. - The good times keep on coming for the red-hot SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees). Down their starting pitcher, the offense carried the load in a 9-3 demolition of the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) at McCoy Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The RailRiders (45-32) posted their 14th win in 19 games for their fifth straight series victory. Pawtucket (39-38) has lost 17 of 21 at home to SWB.
Scheduled starter Luis Cessa was summoned to the big leagues, forcing the RailRiders to toss usual reliever Diego Moreno on a bullpen day. The right-hander gave his club 2.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned). The scores came in the opening inning on a Gary Sanchez passed ball and a Henry Ramos sac fly.
In the second, an umpire injury resulted in a 15-minute delay. With Pete Kozma leading off the inning, a foul ball off home-plate umpire Ryan Clark forced an on-field examination by Pawtucket trainer Jon Jochim. Eventually, Clark walked off the field and crew chief Joe Born raced to gather his home-plate umpiring gear.
When action resumed, Kozma walked and Jonathan Diaz followed with a bunt hit that was errantly misplayed by second baseman Ryan Court to put them at second and third. Ben Gamel drove home Kozma with a groundout to second and Aaron Judge sent Diaz to the plate with his first career Triple-A triple, a just-fair drive down the right-field line. After Sanchez walked, Tyler Austin blooped an RBI single into right field that scored Judge for a 3-2 SWB lead.
Rehabbing big leaguer Ryan Hanigan's fourth-inning sac fly tied the game, but the RailRiders responded the next half-inning with three more tallies. Austin doubled in a pair and later crossed the plate himself on a wild pitch.
In the seventh, Cesar Puello expanded the advantage with an RBI single and Kozma doubled home a pair.
Reliever Tyler Webb (3-0) got the win with 3.1 innings of one-run ball. Pawtucket starter Henry Owens (5-4) gave up five runs over four-plus frames to shoulder the loss.
SWB's season-long 10-game road trip shifts to Syracuse for a three-game set against the Chiefs (Washington Nationals). It gets underway at 6:35 p.m. on Monday as SWB's Chad Green (5-6, 1.67) faces fellow righty Taylor Hill (3-6, 4.76).
The RailRiders return home for a seven-game homestand starting on the Fourth of July against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies). The game includes post-game fireworks presented by the PA Lottery; foam light-up sticks to the first 2,500 fans through the gates thanks to Shur Save Supermarkets; USA-themed jerseys worn by the RailRiders; and Fourth-of-July hats worn by the team that will be auctioned off during the game.
